Long story short: laptop will not boot - power button does nothing - cannot even enter bios recovery mode (end key + power cable). I'm on my second motherboard and just out of warranty. I watched the tech replace the last one and am fully capable of doing the repair myself. Where should I buy one from? I've seen a couple for ~$400, which doesn't sound worth it...

That's pretty much the price, remember that the motherboard has the GPU embedded. Therefore you are buying a new PC - pretty much.

I just sent mine in to the depot for repairs knowing it needed a new main board. The service was cheaper than any place I could find for the replacement board and has a 90 day warranty. Quick turnaround time, and so far so good..

I ended up grabbing a new one off of ebay for ~$315 (downgraded to the 1GB vram gpu). Installed it this morning no problem. Everything is back up and running. I'm still pretty skeptical of the long term life on these laptops (this being my 3rd motherboard on a machine that's rarely used)...
