HDMI carries audio and video, so it should be playing through the tv speakers.

All the sound is carried to your tv. So if you can, plug your headphones into your tv, that is, if it's long enough.

Right click the speaker icon in the tray and set the output device to your headphones instead of HDMI

Is it possible to split the video and audio? I want to send to video to my tv with hdmi, but the audio to my receiver through another means... My av receiver is too old to have HDMI.., is there a way to output optical audio or any digital audio with the m14x while outputting video through HDMI?

Sure. You can put the Sound separately to whatever Device you want.
