Is it true that the usb 3.0 port can be used to charge items even while the m14x is off? I would appreciate feedback from people who have firsthand experience with this. Thanks

Yes it will work, and I think the USB port on the left will charge only if your laptop is plugged in, it work when the laptop is off but it must be plugged in, at least for me.

do take note that by default the bios is set to charge while off if the power adapter plug on... you can change it to charge on all occasion.. regardless you hav power adapter on or not..

For the charging when powered off, you have to set that in the BIOS. In any case, only the left USB 2 port is capable.

thanks a lot for all the help...also, in order for the speed benefits offered by the usb 3.0 to take place, is it necessary that the device being plugged into the 3.0 ports also have a 3.0 usb? are there any special usb 3.0 cables that are required in order to reap the benefits?

Yes to both cable questions. You can't get the fast speeds on a USB 2 cable. I've only tried a USB 3 external HDD and it's quite nice.
