I plugged in a friend's usb 3 hard drive the other day into one of the usb 3 ports on the right of my laptop and nothing happened. The drive physically started spinning up (I had it in my hand and could feel it) but nothing showed up in either device manager or my computer. Im running windows 8 and have no unknown devices in device manager. Any ideas why this would happen?

I had issues previously with the USB socket not supplying enough power if it doesn't have an ac adapter. Note this was with my desktop.

I am having similar issue on my system with USB 3 seagate back up plus desktop. It will disconnect and reconnect during a large file copy from a USB 2 ext drive to a USB 3 ext drive. File folder from 43g to 130g. The disconnect point delayed from at 15g to 43g after seagate dashboard installed.
I was copying a system image file over so I really don't want to cut file into parts and reassemble. I may be able to work around but I wish to find a way to get it done even I just need to do it once. I can't trust my system if it can't work .
