I have an external WD My Passport USB hard drive (3.0) that when I plug into the 14, it powers up but does not show up on the computer. Even under Disk Management I cannot see the drive. If I plug an older external USB (2.0) hard drive in I works fine. I tried deleting and reinstalling the USB controller but that didn't work. The only way I was finally able to get the 14 to recognize the drive was to reboot with it already plugged in (not a good solution). Any ideas?

[edit] Forgot to mention this is with Windows 8 Pro.

Have you checked if there are any firmware updates for your drive?

Other than that, do you use imaging software such as Daemon tools?

Updated the firmware (that was a good idea by the way!) but it didn't help. I have noticed that if I disable the USB controller (Intel USB eXtensible) and then re-enable it, it will recognize the drive.

Don't know if this would help, but I have 2 WD drives, and one of them didn't show up on the usb 3 ports on my m14x r1, until I tried using the other drive's cable. It worked great afterwards, but strangely enough it would only work with usb 2.0 ports with the other cable. I guess not since you said that it detects it when you restart the driver, but It did detect it sometimes with the original cable, so you could try with another cable if you have one at hand.

I'm using Windows 8 Pro 64 and that driver refuses to install. I did end up doing a clean install of Windows 8 on my Samsung SSD and the same problem still exists. I can still get the OS to recognize the SSD if I disable and then re-enable the eXtensible driver.

Ive had the same issues with windows 8 and my m14x r1, the usb 3 will sometimes work and sometimes not, after trouble shooting for 2 hours just got over it and went back to win 7, works fantastic and feels smoother to :)
