So I have the opportunity to purchase an Alienware M14X R2 with the following specs:

    Intel i7-3610QM
    6GB DDR Memory
    Nvidia 650M CPU
    1366x768 (Fuuuu)
    DVDRW

The seller is asking $600 for it. Warranty is still available through July of this year with the option to extend it. So what do you guys think? What would a comparable machine like this be worth? I'm a little hesitant due to the screen resolution but it'll be hooked up to an external monitor anyway.

    Thanks!

assuming there is nothing wrong with it, thats a nice deal. i got mine from Dell as a refurb with a coupon code for just under $900 shipped with the same specs.

Go get it plus an aftermarket screen with 900p, should cost around $90, and you'll be totally happy with it.

Only a 650M? Sounds pretty weak!

Better off spending similar money on a better specced second hand M15x with a better GPU. That also will be upgradeable down the line unlike in the M14X.

    Yeah why not :D

Ok the M14x is certainly more portable being smaller and lighter but also has worse build quality.

The M15x has 1080p, up to 7970M/680M GPU, and the 920/40M can match a 3610qm when OCed properly which the M15x cooling can handle no problem. Also 8-16GB of ram also works fine

It is a contender at this price point. Yes I own one :p

It is a contender for sure. I'm a big fan of stuff like that, getting the maximum out of an older model :p

But the RAM is 1333Mhz, and you can't upgrade the CPU... Not that those matter but still wouldn't want any bottlenecking at some point, and there's a limit to how long GPUs will be compatible :p

Of course it's a major contender at the price point, but don't really see a reason to just get an old model when buying a computer :p

I also wouldn't see a reason if the machine in question was alot better.

Unfortunately the 650M GT will be obselete far quicker than the M15x ram bandwidth and CPU. In the M15x these components will eventually become noticeable bottlenecks (maybe 2-3 years). By that time however this chap will have got rid of this M14x :D

My point is he might be able to hold onto the understandably old M15x longer than the brand new M14x.
