Terribad performance in several games, especially SWTOR. In SWTOR frame rates periodically drop to 5-6 dps depending on the terrain. Most games automatically select the lowest settings. Diablo III lowers the resolution under the display default. Lets not even talk about 3DMark 11 scores (P1440-ish).

Basically, the GT 555M is a dog with fleas, scratching itself, howliing at the moon and tinkling on my foot when I am playing games on my M14x. It is without a doubt the worst gaming GPU I have ever used. What really sucks about it is that it is soldered to the motherboard

Please tell me that the GT 650M 2 GB is better?

I had a cursory look at this after I bought my M14X: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - Notebookcheck.net Tech There are game benchmarks toward the bottom of the page. They had Diable 3 running on ultra at 1080P with the 650M, not sure if it was the 1GB or 2GB model but the difference wouldn't be much at that resolution.

Have you white listed the games you are playing so they are running on the nvidia GPU? Optimus may not be switching over from integrated graphics. Also, have you kept your drivers up to date? I thought the 555m was a pretty good graphics card.

as the guy above me said, I think your running on intergrated graphics and not the 555m. If you don't know how to white-list see the guide in my sig. I would whitelist both the TOR launcher.exe and the game itself. Hope this helps. :)

Yes, of course I have whitelisted. I could not run Diablo III if my drivers were not up to date. Sorry, the 555M is a bow-wow of a GPU.

SWTOR really exposes the weakness of the 555M. The 555M has slow, DDR3 memory and loads textures in SWTOR very slowly. It seems to constanly have to reload textures which is what I believe is causing the frame rates to bottom out in SWTOR.

Please, if you read some thread that some M14xR2 users who has a 1GB/2GB GT650M, they still having problem with D3, so what do you expect from a game that doesnt fully support or not support the Optimus technology properly? Plus if you OC the GPU, the performance is very decent, I never got any performance dip when I do the OC on most of the game I play except for those that design to require a Desktop to play best like BF3 and Crysis 2.

All of the game you listed here are game that people are having trouble and struggle to having it run with the NV GPU, there are also some few thread here with performance issue back when SWTOR release. Try OC your GPU or else upgrade to the R2 or get the M17xR4 or just build yourself a Desktop if you want Real performance frame by frame.

Between the 1GB and the 2GB, there is no different in term of performance, the only different is the memory size, since this time Dell only offer the GDDR5 version of the GT650M.

Im running both SWTOR and Diablo 3 and most of the settings are maxed out and my frame rates are perfectly smooth, I dont know the exact frame rate, but all i know is its smooth.

Believe me when i say this, I HATE games that play choppy and I would rather play the game with lower graphics quality for a smoother game then have it all cranked up high so it looks good.

I was and am still really surprised at how the r1 is holding up in the latest games, I have BF3 on medium graphics (res of 1366x768 - really doesn't make much difference on the 14inch screen) and i'm hitting on average 40 frames per second.

So for you to call the 555m card "A dog with fleas" just tells me you havent configured it properly and dont know how to get the most out of it, the newest drivers dont always mean better game play \ frame rates.

Also who really cares about 3d mark scores if the games play smoothly, save that benchmarking cr@p for your desktop

There isnt that much to configuring the 555m properly. Whitelisting is easy, that is one of the first things I did with it. Updating the driver is trivial and I have the latest. That leaves the GPU. Its just a terrible GPU. Frame rates have been bottoming out in SWTOR in several driver versions.

I'm not running the latest, I believe i'm a few revisions behind (1 or 2) but because the laptop runs everything I chuck at it, I dont see the need to upgrade until it starts having problems.

I'm not trying to have a go at you (or trolling whatever that actually means), but i honestly believe you may be doing something wrong, or not realising you are. Maybe a reinstallation? maybe your graphics card has problems? running on battery? what bios version are you on?

Multiple people have come here now to tell him the card is fine, and he still argues that it's a bad card. Sometimes you just have to let people be thick and ignore them.

Have you been messing around with the nvidia control pannel? Whenever I make any changes the frame rate drops enormously. I would suggest resetting defaults and restarting.

I can still play BF3 on Ultra settings at 1080p with 25-30fps (OC, AA and SSAO off, x8 AF), so I cant imagine it can be that bad of a card for two other games.

A foolproof way of testing if youre running the card is to plug in an HDMI cable and use an external monitor. The HDMI port is hooked to the GPU, so it's impossible for graphics switching to be an issue.

One thing I like to add is, what Power Plan did you use? If you use Balance then try switch to High Performance instead or just go to the advance setting and change the "Minimum Processor State" to 100%, that would get your CPU up to max power (Best suit with Turbo Boost OFF) all the time and this method also best when you OC the GPU to minimize the GPU bottleneck as low as possible.

I have to agree that the GT555 sucks! I've tried to reload windows from scratch, set everything to high perf mode, whitelist D3 for the nvidia card. No luck, the thing runs slower than my 27" imac (ATI 5750 1GB) at max resolution and detail.

All Nvidia GPU settings are defaults with the exception of whitelisting.

That's something I haven't done! can't wait to see if this helps. I am kind of feeling that same way about the 555 as the guys who started this post. Diablo 3 drops to 20 sometimes. I have all factory defaults and have whitelisted wow and D3. I only get 40 FPS on max in WOW

    No substitute for system optimization.
-Set windows performance to - Adjust for best performance
-Set page file to at least = ram (advise 1.5 x ram)
-Set Power Settings to High Performance
    -Reduce all processes via msconfig
-CPU utilization should be ZERO percent at idle. Any higher means you need more optimization.
    -reasonable overclock when needed.
-configure nvidia control panel. Set all items to performance (instead of quality)
-Disable un-needed items like blue tooth or anything that utilizes power.

I dont have a 555, so going strictly off what ive read, but it seems your being slightly over dramatic lol. In this thread alone, i've seen several people WITH a 555 claim they have made the card work, rather smoothly at that.

I am curious though, on the odd chance someone here has used both the 555 and 650... is it a dramatic difference? I ordered a new m14x r2 that should be here in a week so i wanna know what to expect :)

Have both r1 and r2 right now. Stock vs Stock the games are usually 5-10 FPS difference.

I just received my SSD yesterday. The M4.
Did a fresh installation and an old Nvidia driver for GT555M. Bios I am on A05. With my m14x_R1 now.

After the fresh installation, I installed d3 and surprising the fps is good now. I can't get the exact framerate but I believe it is well above 60fps. Max resolution, high texture. Rest on Low though.

Before my fresh installation on my stock HDD, the framerate was bad, bad bad. Maybe 10fps to freezing moments with low resolutions and everything at low.

hmm, if i can run crysis 2 and bf3 maxed out smoothly then i believe you are doing it wrong, the gt 555 is a great card

Had the same problem with my 555m in my dell xps17. Solved when all of a suddon quickset popped up and told me that the power adapter couldnt be recognized. called dell support, gave them the model nr, and got a new one the next day. Works like a charm. BF3 40-50 FPS Ultra. GW2 60fps high, PS2 30-40 medium.

Thing was that the laptop would lower the voltage on the GPU to save power bc the adapter was malfunctioning.
Even if you dont get the message, just call them and ask for a new one. never hurts. even let me keep the old one.
