Well, to start off, I searched, and apparently search for the M14x section doesn't work. I tried searching the other model's threads and it worked though... I tried all kinds of different search words, and nothing. Anyways...

I'm new to this forum, but not new to forums in general. Please don't flame me in to the ground, cause I'm sure this has been asked (I just can't search to find it)

What RAM are you guys using in your M14x's? I just ordered mine yesterday with the 4GB 1600Mhz option, but I'm going to but some and put it in myself. Please provide links if you have them. I don't want to over spend on something I find if it's not needed, and I don't want to buy a piece of crap. So, I figured I'd ask the guys that have been using there's for awhile. Thanks in advance!

I'd seen those from a couple of people's signatures on here. Any reason for specifically those? I've seen cheaper ones around, but I don't know much about memory. Is there something that makes them a better buy?

You plug em and you dont need to modify anything on bios to make it run at desired performance. Hence the name

Stick with that if you're just browsing and gaming. If you'll be doing hefty video editing, then you could spring for 8GB.

Timings are better than Kingston HyperX. If i were buying today definitely Corsair is the better choice. The only thing remaining to be seen is if the timings stay as advertised when installed in M14X.

9-9-9-24 is such a minuscule difference compared to 9-9-9-27. I doubt even benchmarks would show a difference. Don't the HyperX have heat spreaders? That would sway my vote towards those if I ever were to upgrade my RAM.

Faster frequencies / tighter timings don't make a difference, really. You might see a 1% improvement in a couple of synthetic benchmarks, certainly not in games.

You could upgrade to 8GB if you like; RAM's pretty cheap these days. The only real reason I'd pay more for memory is for the heatspreaders (if they'll even fit, not sure on this), given that the M14x isn't exactly the coolest-running laptop Alienware has ever produced.

Now lower voltage is certainly attractive! Not sure if I'd want that or a heat spreader...

    Afternoon Gents,

Well I ordered my M14x last Friday, it entered production saturday and shipped on Sunday - just had the email to say it will be delivered on Wednesday :)

Anyway.... just had a question for people experienced with this particular system. I ordered it with 4GB RAM as I want to put 16GB in it and Dell don't offer that as an option even though it supports it.

Am thinking about some RAM labelled as:

    "16GB (2x 8GB) PC3-10600 10666 1333MHz SODIMM 204-Pin Laptop Memory 9-9-9-25"

Now its been a while since I got down into the timings and stuff so hopefully someone with better knowledge can confirm this will be ok.

    Cheers guys

Timings wont make the ram incompatible. Any 16GB kit of SODIMMs would work.

    Nice system btw :)

I'm in the same boat. Timings can effect performance. I need to upgrade my ram but I'm not sure which timings are preferable. Any help would be appreciated.

My rule of thumb has always been tighter timings are good (lower CAS numbers) but bandwidth is better. If you can afford and your laptop can use DDR3-1600 I would go with that. I know 2x8gig kits aren't available on newegg in DDR3-1600, but don't know if they are available elsewhere.

For those interested in staying with 4GB ram, I have 2 sets of very rare 2x2GB HyperX 1600mhz XMP ram (you'll have to tweak the bios to Profile 2). The great thing about this ram is that they run at CL7. Very very fast. I've got 4 sticks totaling 8GB but when run in 4x2GB configuration they will default to 1333Mhz. I've tried and tried to get them to run at full speed with 4 sticks but no dice. So they are best paired and run @4GB for those who don't need any more than that. PM me if interested.

That ADATA 2x4GB 1600MHz 1.35V kit is back in stock, about to jump on it if someone (bluefalcon) can confirm it working correctly :)

I dont see em anywhere anymore but i got a 8GB kit of HyperX 1866 from newegg a while back and its sweet. its sandybridge plug and play for 1866 and cpu-z shows it running at 1866. from the reviews i read when i was making the decision to send back the hyperX 1600, it also dramatically increases integrated graphics performance though i could care less about that. it also looks sick with the grey and silver drilled heatsinks, enough that i left the ram cover off so it could be seen through the grill.

TBH, if newegg still had the 1866 in 8gb kits, I would've bought those. I settled on the ADATA ones as they were a decent price, and the lower voltage (I use my M14x for work, and I hate busting out the power brick when I don't have to...)

I moved my Samsung 470 128gb drive to the M14x, and that coupled with the ram from ADATA should cause a healthy jump in battery life :)

Well, fired right up, even ran at DDR3-1600 by default in my M14x. Gonna research the XMP stuff, as supposedly these sticks have them, but I couldn't get it to post with the XMP profiles enabled...

1.28V instead of the advertised 1.35V? Even better! Notice any better battery life or temperatures over stock RAM?

I havent really tested it out much, but as far as I know, dimm voltage isnt dynamic like cpu voltage w/ power saving features turned on. Even if the battery life isnt improved that much, its a solid 8 gig set of ddr3-1600... I'll run it on battery tomorrow at work and see how she does.

so far, windows is telling me I have 90% battery life left, and over 4hrs... that any I have a million tabs open in IE, chrome open, outlook, and steam running... all this on the default windows 7 powersaver power plan. not terrible, but not quite M11x standards :D

does the i7 2630qm processor supports 1600mhz memory, does it really uses the 1600mhz power. I have 4gb 1600mhz RAM on my 14x ...but the intel site says that it supports onlt 1066/1333 mhz ram.
and what about 16gb memory support for the processor. Intel says the processor supports upto 16gb.

I have been running on battery, working pretty much all morning.

Currently @ 56%, windows is reporting 2.5+ hours remaining, and I have been working since 8am (on battery, 10:40 now cst). So its a definite improvement, but to be honest, my results may be skued by the SSD too... I haven't really tested battery life since I installed my Samsung 470 128gb.

To me it is... Better battery life and more capacity than my factory config. As far as I know, RAM doesnt dynamically undervolt itself like a cpu does, so the potential energy savings are huge. tbh, I didnt do more than a seat of the pants test, so it may not make much of a difference, but every bit of battery life helps in my case.

    I plan on ordering a m14x with Intel® Core™ i7 2760QM (2.4GHz,3.5GHz,w/Turbo Boost, 6MB Cache)

I want to get 16gb memory, but Dell is asking way to much money. Can someone tell me what I need to install this myself as far as the type of memory? Is it possible? Do I need 2 8gb cards or 4 x 4gb?

    Thanks !

    You would need 2x8GB sticks.

16GB of RAM is complete overkill ...Is there a specific reason to why you need 16GB?
