Has anyone bought an off-brand charger for their m14x? I want to pick up a spare and leave it at home but I'm not so keen on paying $70-80 for the official Dell charger.

looked around and seem not able to find a 150W AC ADAPTER which the M14X uses. i've only seen 90W AC ADAPTER'S which will POWER the m14x BUT NOT charge the battery.

I got 2 from ebay that work fine. just search m14x power adapter

they are a bit larger than the standard one, but i have one setup on my desk at home, one setup on my desk at work that never move, then the standard one that came with the m14x i carry around in my bag :)

Every Dell laptop made in the past 10-15 years uses chargers compatible with one another. That means that there is a ripe market for 3rd party chargers that will work. As long as you find a charger that can supply the voltage you need, you should be fine.

I've used 3rd party chargers before. The ones I bought were actually more expensive than the Dell-branded chargers, because they are usually superior to the standard Dell chargers in some way (lighter weight, slimmer profile, had wall / car / air charging capability, had a spare USB charging port, etc). But they all worked fine.

If you are looking for a charger for the purposes of saving money, look on eBay. You can easily find official Dell-branded 150W chargers that should run about $25 used.

Thanks. This is exactly how I want to use it. I just got a desk where I can hide the wires in a little nook and I'd rather have a charger that can stay hidden.

Dont get a 90W one though, you must get a 150W, the 90 will reduce performance while plugged in because it cant supply enough power to the componants (I tried as i ahve another dell laptop and 4 90W chargers)

you will notice mouse stuttering issues, and gaming issues.

Amazon.com has pretty good prices on the 150w charger.

I have several 130w Dell Chargers from the E-series docking station. Any thoughts on using one of those as a backup?

Yeah, a 130W charger would probably work just fine.
