Searched but didn't find a thread about that (found one in the m17x r3 section where some ppl are having the same problem).

So the soft touch coat on my m14x is starting to peel off. Mostly on the corners, sides and hinges.

I use a laptop bag when carrying it around and I don't take it in and out of the bag more than 4-5 times/week.

    Anyone else experiencing that?

The soft touch coat is awfully thin IMHO.

Will call Dell and report back.

Maybe it's overexposure to sunlight warping the outside material? I would say abrasion, but when do the inside hinges touch something?

    No sunlight exposing at all.
I was thinking about the abrasion too but, like you mentioned, what about the hinges?

I called tech support about that and they are dispatching someone to my house to replace the whole casing.

Just an update to share my horrible experience with Dell repair depot center about this case.

So the tech guy came to my house to replace the parts that were peeling off but Dell sent him the wrong ones so Dell tech support told me to send the laptop to depot repair.
I sent it there and after having to wait 2 weeks for a "missing part", I finally got it back and immediately noticed that something was wrong. The computer was all dirty and nothing was replaced except for the display (with the hinge peeling off).
But wait... there is more! The underside is all scratched up, even the nameplate have a huge scratch on it!
Then I open the laptop. There is dust everywhere and... hairs!
But wait there is more...the screen have 2 scratches on it!

So I call Dell tech support back explaining my frustration and they offer me a system exchange with a brand new system, that I accept.

Moral of the story, avoid Dell repair depot center at all cost!

That's rough, but at least you got the brand new system? Pretty sweet? :)

Yes, I'm very satisfied with the outcome and with how Alienware tech support handled the situation.
Hope it comes with the i7-2670QM :p

I think you didnt read my thread properly.
Dell is sending me a brand new m14x to replace the one I have now (because the soft touch coat is peeling off at some places)

    :p

    for my part:

i have a little softcoat spot peeling of too (2x2mm) and the surface left of the touchpad (where the left wrist lies usually) seems to wear of..

called dell, sent some pictures and now they send me a technican so replace: palm rest, base and the display. i just hope the new parts will all fit perfect. i dont want any lose spots or light-leaks..

Mine is more than a month old, and it's fine. Maybe a different substance was used between when others are made compared to mine?

a little offtopic, but now i got a small light spot in the 900p display... and my keys start to make more and more noises (like it could use some oil).

good thing to keep the techs busy. thats not the build quality i know from my thinkpads..

I've had my m14x for a little over a week and it's already got a couple bare patches in the soft touch coat on the corners. I've been babying it so I'm guessing with more use it'll be a mess. Hopefully this is not a widespread issue.

I guess that's why we got it with the material covering/sleeve. Should slip it in before putting it into your laptop bag.

for my part i always use the cover when packing it into the bag. and a thinkpad thats been carried in that bag for 2 years doesnt show that blank corners (and has a "soft finish" too.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do with the new one they sent me.
But can't do anything for the other parts (for ex on mine the hinge was peeling off as well or as someone mentioned the palmrest area...). Look like you dont need much friction to have the coating peeling off.
