I'm going to buy an m14x but I haven't decided if I want to upgrade the screen. At the specs I have it at now it's about at the top of my budget, but if the 900p screen is going to make that much a difference I'll get it. Should I get it? Will it change that much?

Not even a question. I would get the screen upgrade before anything else.

1366x768 is too low of a resolution for a 14" display. You will be doing a lot of scrolling. With 1600x900 you can use two windows side-by-side and cut down on the amount of scrolling you have to do (online, etc). 1366x768 has less than 3/4 the space of a 1600x900 screen.

I'd recommend the 900p upgrade, but it isn't that necessary. Yeah it looks super sharp, bright, and there's much more space, newer games would play a little better on the lowered resolution. (I sometimes lower it to 720p on demanding games) It depends on if you're a fan of a smaller aspect from the 900p screen, meaning the smaller looks of things.

Since when is 1366x768 too low for a 14" Laptop?
1366x768 is the Standard for most 15" machines these days.

Granted you have more space on the 1600x900, but it is a perfectly viable question - And I firmly disagree.
The upgrade is not required nor is it essential.
And this is from someone who purchased a M14x that happened to come with the upgrade at random but doesn't get used.

    Personal preference - That's better.

Let's not forget about the 300 nit brightness of the screen. Bigger, brighter, better. :D

I dont see how anyone could use a laptop over 13in with 1366x768 resolution. Most high quality laptops all have higher resolutions than that. Get the 900p resolution as first upgrade. Its a must!

Not for now, but in the next 2-3 years, even your "most 15" laptop will had at least 900p - 1080p resolution, and those most laptop I see are usually on MBP 15", Toshiba, Sony, HP, and Dell. Most of the 15" nowadays are having at least 800p if not 1600x900, But if it is 2 years ago, then yes most 15" laptop will having the 720p like my old Sony Vaio.

I dont see a reason why you shouldnt spend money to upgrade the screen.
