I got my m14x r2 about 2-3 weeks ago, and haven't really used it since as I've been waiting for my next paycheck so I could upgrade to an SSD and swap an HD in the Optical drive bay. I turned it on when I got it to make sure it was good, and then shut it down.

Fast forward to tonight, I have my SSD and HD and Optical bay caddy ready.

I turn on the computer (on battery) and jump into the BIOS to check which SATA setting is turned on (I considered switching from RAID to AHCI). I left the setting how it was, and exited without saving the settings. It starts to load up, and I see that windows is configuring some update. Then the screen goes black. I hear the CD drive trying to read (or eject something) several times. It's still blank for a few minutes. I turn it off. And now when I turn it back on, the screen is still black. I don't even see the BIOS boot with the Alienware head. What the hell is going on with this guy?

I tried plugging it into the ac adapter, I also tried unplugging it and disconnecting the battery, I reconnected both and still nothing.

    Thanks for any help.

When you disconnected battery, did you hold power button to drain all the power? or just reconnected and started it up again?

    Let me try that.

I also just tried connecting it to an external monitor. Both VGA and HDMI gave me no results.

It's a no-go. Looks like somehow my screen died, but then wouldn't an external monitor work?

Well my expertise with m14x ends here, as mine is still sitting in the box at home. But did you get any beeps when you start it up, or something?

It's probably hardware fault, mobo/gpu, (When my GPU's on m1730 died, I got black screen only too...)

So yeah, maybe someone can answer who know more about m14x, but I would contact dell.

(and no it sure isn't OS fault, you would see boot screen at least.)

No beeps when I turn it on. The keyboard and other lights turn on and I hear it run, but that's about it.

Ya I'll call Dell in the morning, I was just hoping I could get it working tonight. This sucks. I was so excited that I was finally going to setup my SSD + HD. Looks like they'll have to sit in their packaging for a while longer. Thanks for trying to help me.

I experienced the same with my older notebook, it was an ASUS G2s (kinda old now). The issue occured after about 7 months of usage (still in warranty), and I sent it back to fix this.
The notebook returned with a new MoBo and a new screen, and since then, everything went fine.

Go back to factory configuration and see if it works (remove the ssd and install the HDD on its original bay)
