I've heard when the lid on the M14x is closed the keyboard can touch the screen and transfer skin oil and possibly scratch it. I've read that a couple of people put a mouse pad or some other pad between the keyboard and screen when the lid is closed to prevent this but I can't find the thread and I don't know who makes them....anybody know what I'm talking about? Would storing such a pad between the screen and keyboard cause excessive wear on the screen hinges?

I have no clue why Dell would make a laptop that does not have protective bumpers on the screen to keep it from touching the keyboard when closed!!! It's kind of like a tire manufacturer gluing nails into the treads of its tires...your just asking for trouble. I've never even seen a laptop that didn't have protective screen bumpers.

I heard that the Razer Kabuto is a good mouse pad to place between the screen and the keyboard.

I have the razer kabuto mouse pad and love it! Yes it also cleans the screen and I put it between the keyboard and the screen when it's closed and I don't even notice that it is there.

Is it thin enough to keep from causing undue stress on the hinges?

I use a screen protector from the company shaggymac, its pretty good. But not so hot if you want a mouse mat/screen protector all in one.

The screen does have rubber bumpers. It surrounds the entire parameter of the screen.

Even then, the screen may still come into contact with the keyboard due to manufacturing tolerances/variances.

What I've done is to custom order a Shaggymac microfibre cloth sized to fit the m14x perfectly, with a 1/8" spacing all around the chassis. Pictures below.

The rubber bumpers end up pressing down onto the cloth which holds it in place, and the entire edge-to-edge plastic is prevented from coming into contact with the keyboard.

These are my dimensions if anyone is interested:
    1 x 15"-16" Custom Shop Laptop Screen Protector (SPCustom15)
    Color Alloy
    Width 13 1/8 inches
    Depth 8 3/4 inches

This only happens on the m11x on the m14x the rubber bumpers around the sides of the screen prevent this from happening...i think, dont have it yet but thats what my friend said.

I would go with the razer kabuto. The only problem is that the shipping is probably more expensive than the pad itself.

If you use kabuto as a full time mouse pad, it's simply more prone to picking up dirt / teflon dust from mouse feet and hand grease. Never thought it wise to be using it as a screen protector cloth after that.

    Not true.

I owned a m11x and now I own a m14x. The m11x was horrible about the keys nearest the hinge touching the screen. After months of use it started etching permanent marks into the screen. On my m14x, the rubber bumpers keep most of the keys from touching, but some of the keys in the middle of the screen still touch and leave marks. I'll probably order the shaggymac.

I have just had my screen (entire lid assembly!), palm rest, keyboard and keyboard surround replaced after my screen was damaged by the keyboard surround... That is just what Alienware decided to do - I only wanted the screen fixed!

They cannot replace the screen cover as the entire lid/ screen assembly is put together in a dust free atmosphere and hermetically sealed. If they did, we'd all get dust in the screen issues afterwards.

Just ordered a ShaggyMac and it is perfect for the job of protecting against this kind of thing.
