    seriously not happy...

greasy keyboard with crumbs in it?

    greasy palm-rest?

food or something smashed into the little holes in the top of the keyboard bezel next the the Alien head?

    Windows COA sticker coming off?

    Loose & creaky bottom plate?

and this is just from brief inspection after picking it up on my lunch break.

I know its a "scratch & Dent" but this thing looks like the Display model @ Best Buy or something.

not to mention one of the palm-rest LED "vent" lights is not coming on.

when i selected the model on the Outlet i was given a choice between this Scratch & Dent and a Refurb that was $20 cheaper (identical specs). i got the S&D cuz i thought it would have been better based on the price. I guess I choose wrong...

just putting it out there for other buyers, Dell (Alienware) is lowering the bar on Outlet items. :( i have a nice handfull of friends & relatives that have bought Refurbs and S&D before. none of them looked like this.

    Sorry to hear!

Ring up dell, they are usually really good about fixing up this stuff.

Then check your pm's, I sent you another one :)

just asking ppl to chime in here.

is you bottom plate loose feeling & is the touch pad loose or creaky?

asking cuz i guess it wont be worth mentioning to Dell along with the broken stuff if its common.

not sure if the build quality on the M14 is sub par in general or not.

not trying to sound like a tool or anything im just so used to the solid feel of my M11x and was expecting the same thing on this M14x. this M14x just feels loose and creaky all over... :(

    Mine are all tight.

The touch pad makes a slight clicking noise if you tap on it though.

The only thing on my m14x that feels like its not right is the lcd hinges.... there is alot of flex in there, much like my m11x had before I epoxied them solid.

    ok cool.

yea, my touch pad does the same thing.

i kinda expected the hinges to be, well crappy so i didn't even think to mention it. lol

just trying to see whats even worth mentioning to Dell. i havet had a Dell tech home visit yet but ive heard some stories. i rather not have anything replaced thats considered "normal". the risk that tech may make matters worse, scratches, etc.. is enough to almost not say anything at all. i got a stupid cheap deal on this thing and im grateful for that. but i guess i just expected more coming from my near perfect M11x.

Called Alienware yesterday they basically told me to "cancel the order" since i was with in 21 days. i told them i would think about it.

shortly after that the HDD failed (i wasn't sure at the time) tried re-installing the OS and it obviously didnt work. finanly broke out my 750Gb WD black installed on that. everything is fine. then a hr later the screen starts randomly flickering.... what the.....?

it stated flickering right went i set my touch pad lighting zone to white in comand center. (took me a while to figure this out) so i set it back to blue and the flickering stopped. i figured it was some funky thing in CC so i uninstalled it. and 30min later it started doing it again....

im thinking im gonna flash the Bios and see if that fixes the flickering (cc writes to the Bios for the lighting zones). if that dont fix it i guess this sucker is goning back... :(

To be up front...I would send that POS back and save up some money and get a refurb or new...I am very OCD about buying things that are not new for this exact reason.

    follow up:

well after 3 different calls, bouncing around call center hell and even being transferred to a phone system that was under maintenance and hung up on me. i am getting a coffin sent to my house...

at one point i was told i was going to get a replacement sent out to me. but after being tranferred to the ppl that were supost to set that up i was told they couldnt do that. it seems that all i can do is return the system to them so the can "Look at it". they even refused to send a tech to my house. ?

they kept telling me i needed to cancel the order but when i would get transferred the new rep would tell me they couldnt keep my disc. even tho i was told i could... i got a Kickass deal.... so since they wouldn't Guarantee i could reuse the code after i canceled the order i was forced returning it for repair or whatever.

i got $20 saying when i get it back and something will still be broken.

    tally of issues:

screen randomly flickers (even in the Bios)
right palmrest light dose not work correctly
    HDD dead
the touchpad has almost no response on the right side.

again not trying to sound like one of "those ppl" thats never happy or whatever but it seriously looks like they got this thing on return, re imaged the drive and shipped it to my house.

    Someone owes me $20....

All they did was replace the HDD?

And when i say thats all they did im not joking, they didnt even image the HDD. Yea, no windows folks... Also Didn't even attempt to fix any of the other issues. It even said so on the sheet it came back with. Really?

Called and spoke with a dude from Costa Rica. Was pretty cool and agreed it was in everyone's best interest to have a tech stop by my house this time .

And the wait to use my laptop continues.... :-(

Why are you still complaining? You should've returned it when you had the chance and ordered a different one. I'm happy with my refurb. For less than $800 including tax I got a r2 with the i7 and 8gb ram and 500gb hdd. Only thing I wish I ha was the better screen. But all I do is game on it so it's not a big deal. Stalk the outlet and you'd be happy eventually.

    ?

Complaining cuz my story is exactly the same as yours, only my M14x was a POS and they wouldn't honor my coupon code ($300 in savings) for a new purchase if i returned the busted M14x. Kinda already said that in a previous post.

    Anyway.

Tech was awesome. He was just as knowledgeable as me with laptop repair among many other computer related things. We shared stories of computer related topics the whole time he was replacing the bad parts. He was a really cool guy in general and I wish more people in IT were like him.

All the parts were new, which I wasn't expecting. I asked if that was normal & he said that it was random. Sometimes you get refurbished stuff too.

One thing that was cool is the LCD assembly Dell gave him was the 1600x900 one. I originally had the 1366x768 panel. So that was a nice upgrade. I actually did originally order the 1366x768 on purpose for better FPS @ native rez. But whatever, its a much nicer panel. The brightness has much more range (dimmest setting is dimmer & brightest setting is MUCH brighter). The color also has more range and saturation. One con is the pixel matrix is visible but its not too bad. My M11x panel was very similar to this 1600x900 panel quality wise. Good but not great.

Now that everything bad was replaced this laptop feels so much more "premium". it no longer creeks when i pick it up and the screen hinge nice and stiff with minimal play.

Headaches aside i got a awsome deal (and a bonus LCD upgrade) . I just had to spend about 5hrs on the phone and be with out the laptop for the first few weeks i owned it. DELL made good on their errors and made everything right. :)

Glad to hear it all worked out, now lets mod the hell out of these things :)

New bottom plates from dell are only like 18 bucks... think about it.
