This is a bit silly because the board in the m14x supports sata 6gb/s, but it will only provide speeds up to sata 3gb/s. So basically if you put in a sata 6gb/s it will automatically drop speeds to sata 3gb/s.

Just buy a sata 3gb/s drive.
Btw there a whole thread on this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m14x/577821-14x-sata-ii-sata-iii-benchmark-comparison-bios-enabled-disabled-discussion.html

....could be wrong but there is no such thing as sata 2 or sata 3, its just sata with 3gb/s or 6gb/s etc....

I really hope I can pull 6gb/s like others... I purchased a 120GB vertex3 along with my m14x and they're both coming in the mail today...

It's really going to suck if I can't get SATA3 SSD performance out of it. Will probably end up breaking my desktop's 60GB Vertex 2 (x2) Raid 0 Configuration and stick the Vertex3 in there instead of letting it go under utilized with the laptop.

Can always just use the Vertex2s for the M14x and my netbook... I really hope it doesn't have to come to that though.

Definitely go for SATA 6Gbps. Stay away from Intel RST and use MSAHCI.

Sick... SATA3 6Gbps working just fine. Solid as a rock so far.

I just replaced the HDD with an OCZ Vertex 3, installed with OS dvd, installed drivers from Dell's website, and then did a Windows update.

What firmware is your SSD? I am on 2.13.

It'll recognize that its a sata 6gb/s ssd, but have you performed any tests on it to see if you do get the sata 6gb/s speeds?
