    Hello Everyone,

Although I view this forum a lot, this is my first time posting.
With your advice and recommendations, I ordered my M14x just a week ago.

With all the discussion about M14x fan noise, I wanted to ask
will installing a SSD make a considerable difference to the noise
    when playing video games?

If the answer is yes, can you please help me decide which is a better option and why?
For alienware laptops, does it make a difference 1.8 in or 2.5 in SSD?

The SSD will help with the heat under the right wrist rest area, but it will not have any effect on the noise level. The fans themselves are much louder than any HDD noise you would hear, even at very low fan levels.

Is there going to be any sort of fix for that HIGH FAN NOISE level or we just have to live with it?

You are going to have to just live with it. It's a powerful computer and it generates a lot of heat. You gotta sacrifice quietness for power

Normal web browsing or non-gaming work and the system is relatively quiet. Its when you start to do graphic intensive tasks that the fan noise gets significant.

There are no fans near the HDD area, and the HDD doesn't generate enough heat to require a fan. It's all on the system processor and the video card.

I guess the alternative is to wear headphones.

I just hope the fan noise isnt as bad it sounds :(
Haven't gotten it yet, but feel a bit depressed listening to all the negative comments.

Not sure what negative comments you are referring to. A laptop of this size with its specifications needs significant fan power to keep cool while gaming.

Its what comes with high performance..

Before I got mine, I was little nervous about the fan noise, and I'm here to tell you, not to worry. The only time the fan kicks in is if you're playing a game, or running a bench mark. Even then, it get's noisy, but it's not THAT loud. And if you're playing a game, aren't you going to have the game sound turned up anyway?

For sitting on the couch and browsing the web and watching a youtube video or 27, the fan has kicked in once or twice, but it's not on long. The fan's do their job well, in the 3 seconds that fan is on, I've seen my temperatures drop 10 degrees C.

So, stop worrying about it. :)

Trust me, the power will blow you away more than the fan (pun intended :D)

As long as the fan doesn't kick in while watching an HD movie it won't bother me...

That would be rather annoying. Even if I set it to only use the IGP for video playback?

In this case it might not. Sometimes while idling though, I've had the fan kick in full blast for some reason. Don't know if a virus scan started up or what, but it's kind of surprising when it does :-S Still, not loud enough to bug me unless the TV is off :p

That's a turn off. I wouldn't mind at all during gaming; I expect that. But I would like to be able to take it to class and be able to type notes without the fan bugging everybody around me...

Yeah, i'd wait till a few more people reply though, just in case it's a mostly isolated situation :p you might be able to set up a classroom profile where the gpu can be throttled back a whole bunch ?

Well the nvidia gpu shouldn't even be on with Optimus as I would only be using word. Might need to scale back the cpu though...but is there a way to do that other than through the bios everytime?

so do you recommend the SSD or you think I should give the 750 GB - 7200 RPM HDD a go?
