Going to order my m14x real soon and i was looking into the SSDs and everyone going crazy about them. I did some research and what i basically found was this:

    HDD vs SSD

My question is it seems ssd's dont normally run the same size as hdd's price wise. Meaning for and HDD of 500gb and SSD of that same size would be roughly 1200$ and an HDD does not cost nearly that much. So my question is what is the size difference really mean compared to the 2? is it worth replacing the 500gb HDD standard one in the m14x with like a 64gb ssd? or what? Also is it possible to have both and HDD and an SSD or what?

*** BTW could be a good sticky thread dont know how to vote for sticky however***

It's common to use a SSD in the primary and a standard HDD in the optical bay.

I picked C300 SSD and the difference is just lulzelolz, I have 128 gig and since I always deleting movies after seeing them I have enough space for my games/music and other short thing, I would just get me an USB 3.0 portable small HDD which is quite cheap.

It's a mostly a tradeoff of space (and money) for performance. As stated above, a lot of people use the SSD as the main drive for the OS and the HDD for storage. Since the read/write speeds of the SSD are much (much much much) faster than an HDD, using it as a primary drive will 1) boot the OS faster 2) open programs faster 3) transfer files faster. Having both SSD and HDD allows you to have both the performance and storage space, only bringing the cost into the equation.

Hmm, maybe I will consider it  Or .. I will .. I just have to see how much space I actually need, in my m11x I had an 500 gig and I had always 350-400 gig free. :s

be prepared...once you deal with SSD speeds, you will suffer when forced to use lesser drives :p

So how do you include both ssd for performence and hdd for storage do i have to get a cerain system spec for the m14x for tuhis to work or can i do it regardless of the specs on my14x?

TitanGod on this forum has posted an excellent tutorial for swapping out the optical drive for an HDD caddy, where you can put any size drive you want.

EDIT: You can do this with any spec, but you will have to sacrifice your optical drive.

So then no dvd drive huh? Thats a buzzkill. Idk if its worth it i guess il get my m14x first and really see if the SSD is all that worth the speed b.c if its fast enough how it is then i wont need it. However another question is if u swap out the stock HDD u get put an SSD in there, and then use the stock hdd in the optical drive...does this void the warranty? Like if i get the 2 year warranty or w.e and i happen to do this and my laptop breaks somehow will they argue that i tampered with it and not replace the parts or the entire laptop in general?

Nope. If you don't break any Void if removed stickers or the like, you'll be fine. Just in case, you can always keep the optical drive handy, and if it breaks, swap everything back to how it was. :)

thanks ok i think il prolly give it a shot also...if the process of swapping them is relatively quick i mean the tut by titangod seems thorough and very well put together. Could i essentially, swap it, use as i normally would with SSD primary and HDD secondary, but then like when i have to install something through cd( prolly wont be often b.c of today's technology) but hypothetically i could swap everything back install the game to HDD when its back on primary and the dvd drive back on optical, get it on the hdd, and then swap back in the SSD again, and have the game or w.e on my optical drive HDD....lol does that work? And my final question is what size SSD do u reccomend if imma have the stock alienware 500gb hdd in the optical drive?

You could...seems like an awful lot of work though :p Would be better to find an iso of whatever you want to install (legally of course! ;) ) then use an iso mounting program to install it :)

My personally advise is buying the SSD from decent seller with good return service. If you dont like the drive for the money just return it.

I am 99% confidence you will not regret. After 1.5 years usage of SSDs I hate any machine without it.

^^^ thanks and ty takeabyte you have been a huge freakin help man jeez is there anything u dont know, ++rep. BTW in your opinion is the SSD worth the speed adjust while having the HDD in optical drive? In other words im not really sure how the SSD will be making it faster if i have most of the stuff on the HDD because of the size, do they like mingle? Lol like if i have a game or document or program on the HDD when i run them will they run on the SSD thereby giving it more speed, or is the performance boost only for the stuff actually on the SSD?

Lol, anything I learned was from this forum :p

Usually people will put the bulk of their downloadables on the HDD (movies, music, game setups, etc). Programs and games are installed on the SSD.

I personally just have the SSD in there and use USB 3.0 externals for storage, but then again, I'm a netflix subscriber and don't like external cd roms :p

yeah its just the fact that freakin wow is 31gb lol and that would definitely have to go on the SSD which will be quite expensive considering il have to get a relatively big sized SSD. Btw what size is works for the m14x like the physical size not the capacity, im looking on newegg and there is 1.8', 2.5', and 3.5'???
