So I ordered an M14x R2, and received it this week. I got it from the Dell Outlet, but it was "Previously Ordered New" which I assume means it wasn't actually ever used. Anyway, not sure if I just didn't notice it before or if this has happened in the 4 days that I've had it, but the soft coat on the upper right corner of the lid is starting to peel off. It's not huge, but noticeable.

Is this a common problem with the M14x R2? Should I contact Dell/AW? My fear is that if it's noticeable after less than a week, what's it going to look like in a month? In a year?

    Kind of disappointed.

It is not common and should not happen unless you bump it on something hard or it is constantly rubbing against rough surface when you take it in and out of your case or bag.

Hmm, I haven't done either of those things. Just used it very lightly/carefully at home. Haven't even taken the protective plastic stuff off the "grill" yet. Is it worth contacting Dell? The peeling is on the backside of the lid/screen.

I would get that issue repaired or the whole unit replaced. It shouldn't be present on a New purchase or a Previously Ordered New Outlet unit. You may want to try it out a little bit to see how it fits your needs, but make sure you make your call to Dell WELL within the 21day return period.

Yep definitely have Alienware/Dell repair that one or replace it like Havoc recommended.

The rubber coat is peeling on the top left of the lid on my laptop also. I called Dell today and explained that I just noticed the rubber coat peeling and asked if this was normal for a 1 month old laptop. The Dell representative asked me to hold and then came back with this offer:

Dell said that because this was the first time I had called in about this machine, that they would replace my LCD for free even though warranty doesn't normally cover cosmetic issues. Dell asked me if I agreed to having a certified technician come to my house within 48 hrs to replace the entire LCD display. I agreed to this solution and I'll let you guys know what else happens.

Well I'm certainly glad that you got to a good person that helped you even though it was not normally covered. Please do let us know.

Same thing happened with my R1 one month after I had it, suprisingly i've had it for about a year and the problem did not come back and i've used it as my daily notebook (in and out of the same bag 10x a day)

A Dell technician came by the house today to replace my LCD screen because of the paint flaw I mentioned before. The replacement took about 45 min total. It involves taking the laptop apart from the bottom up until the hinges are visible on the top. Overall I am happy that the LCD looks new as it should. One con is that the lid doesn't seem to close as snug as the original, maybe it will work itself into place with time.

Not covered on a brand new laptop? That does not sound right.....

After a few months of service, perhaps....but not new (1 month old) with light usage. At least, that is how I read the description of the issue.....

It was purchased from the Outlet. We have a policy for those PC's they might have little scratches or marks that won't affect performance.

I believe he was referring to my post. My laptop was purchased brand new last month and the paint had already started peeling.

In your case. It was to be covered cuz your PC was brand new and less than a month old and it was indeed covered :p
