Hi all,my warranty is due to run out soon and as i monitor these pages regularly and know many people have had problems in the long run I obviously need to renew my warranty.
My question is, has anyone recently renewed their warranty on the R1 model and if so what quotes were they receiving? Also is there any other company that will cover technical faults etc that may be cheaper than buying from dell?
I was quoted more than £170 from dell for a year and that seems a little extreme to me, also a little out of my range and i am loathed to not have warranty for this machine due to the problems many people face.

Dell have high prices on warranty renewals for all models. Thought, the support is kinda great, fast and free returns both ways. But i dont think you will be charged higher than £170 for any replacement because Alienware are modulables and easy to fix.

I thought Dell UK is much much better than other regions on warranty renewal. I bought multiple AW laptops with stock 1yr warranty, rang them on 1 day of receipt and I have been offered something like £170 for 3 additional years covers (thats 1+3 = 4 years in total!)
Unless things have changed in Dell UK/EU I cannot imagine the price been tripled in just a year. I can show you my pdf receipt or pm you the indian sales guy's email who sold me the warranty
Or maybe it is different story when it comes to renewal. I always tried to purchase the cover on day 1 so there is lots room to negotiate the price with them -

Secondly i would normally have got 3 years warranty when i purchased the laptop but as i had spent so much on it in the first place it was just out of my league at the time.
I know their email reps are fairly useless so i will try ringing them on monday to see if the phone reps can give me a better offer.
I was quoted in email the following
1 years - £175
2 years £375
3 years - £560
Is it just me or are they having a laugh? It would be cheaper for me to get two seperate one year warranties than to get a 2 year warranty! Is this standard practice with dell?most companies will offer a discount for 2nd and 3rd year renewals! -
Normally I never buy warranty at the point of building my laptop. I always wrote to the same guy @dell.com to get a quote for 3 years extension cover and it cost much less than your figures.
On my invoice it says Add 3 Years Next Business Day OnSite Support ? XPS, Adamo & Alienware, unit price 149.99, VAT 30, total 179.99. And I can trace the 4 years cover in total on Dell site.

See, there is a difference between warranty renewal and warranty extension.
1) Warranty Renewal is applicable once your laptop is officially out of warranty as per your billing date.
2) Warranty extension is done when you laptop is within the warranty and is far more cheaper then warranty renewal.
If your laptop is still in warranty, ask them for warranty extension specifically and tell them that your still have warranty left and you just want to extend it to be on a safer side and say that you heard it costs like GBP 170 -ish for 3 years extension on warranty as some guy already had done this. Give no specific but just enough info to give you a sweet deal.
But stress on warranty extension. If they still intend to extort money from you, say you spoke to some dell tech some time back regarding the warranty extension and he said you can extend it anytime as long as you are still covered under 1 yr warranty.
Trouble with call support is , half the time, they dont understand what you really want. so be clear. -
Thank you very much for your responses, as my laptop is still in warranty it is really just an extension i need, their email department is useless though so will have to try get my point across by phone when i am not working next. I dont mind paying a bit to get an extended warranty but im sure they were just trying an extortionate figure to test the water first,doeesnt seem to be about customer care but about what they can fool you with to start until you haggle them!

ok i have also just had an email because my wrranty expires in 12 days and so i rang them up with the very real expectation of buying it. however they also wanted 175 off me (for an extension). when i questioned the dell rep about it he told me it is 220 if the machine had been out of warranty!!! talk about a rip off.
now i love dell warranty in fact it is by far and away the best i have ever had the pleasure of dealing with but at 175 i wont be taking it. damn shame but there is no way i would pay that. i honestly thought the warranty renewals were about 59 quid which i was quite happy to pay.
very disappointed.

sorry to hijack the ops thread but i would like to keep the machine under warranty but at 175 it isnt affordable.. regardless of worth i simply cant afford to be spending that sortof money right now.
i did actually get a call back different person said oh the 175 is for three years... i thought sounds right based on prices i have had before... then she says oh no it isnt it is indeed for 1 year. she offered me a ten per cent discount which takes the price down to 157.50. still about 96 quid more than i can afford.
having thought about it it wouldnt surprise me if they have hiked the price up an inflation busting 300 per cent after all the warranty calls they must have had regarding the hinges... making us pay in the long run for their screw up. bad form i say and the one dark cloud on an otherwise lovely horizon. -
You guys should still bug em every other hour until you talk to somebody sensible. When i purchased my machine, i called up customer care after a week or so. and got 2 year extension with complete cover for roughly $200 ~ GBP 120. It doesnt if you have 12 days or 12 months, as long as its in warranty you should be getting a cheaper option.threaten them, talk to their manager. I am sure they are not telling you the cheaper option hoping when your warranty runs out, you pay more .
I may be wrong as these things vary country to country but no harm in trying right? But gbp 175 is really too much for one year. If you can somehow manage to grab a 2 year deal for that amount, just go for it.It is still slightly more but better then current deal you are getting -
When I first began my hunt for warranty quotes, this woman in Dell chat quoted me ....(wait for it) ....600$ for 1 year ROOOOOFL!
Since then, the cheapest quote I've seen was 280$, which would cover one additional year ontop of the original one year (making it 2 years total).
Considering the price was 199$ at the time of purchase for a 2nd year, 280$ is a decent price since rates do increase after purchase.
Just don't wait until it's out of warranty or else you'll be paying a significantly higher amount. -
I believe 179 quid for 3 extra years is extremely reasonable. Like I said before, I got 4 years cover in total with this service. However knocks and water are not covered. Overheat (w/o cleaning the dust etc) is definitely covered.

thanks mate for the picture. i can see the price i am being asked to pay is nearly three times the price you paid. i can as it goes only afford one year right now but wil happily pay it if it is at the sort of price divide three that you paid so around the 60 quid mark (which funny enough is the sort of price i got when i asked when it was new but didnt bother buying... regretfully i might add now) at the end of the day i know it is not a lot of cash for peace of mind i can trust. we shall see how i get on and i will post to let you all know.

My 1 year warranty runs out in November. I'm thinking of also extended it (I've already had a tech guy come out twice for my machine)... did you guys ring up or email reps for the best deal etc?
Also is it too early to sort out the waranty now or do i need to wait till nearer november when the existing one is coming to an end?

it is never too early cos the wrranty only starts when the original warranty runs out.
ok so i spoke to a few people from dell. i am in the uk and actually have an m11x r1 so a much cheaper model than most of you lot.
after haggling like mad i finally managed to get an offer of 3 years for 140 quid which i thought was extremely reasonable. however the condition was i found someone else to take out extended warranty at the same time. anyways my parnets have a dell and i spoke to them and they agreed to go for it as they were offered 3 years extended warranty at 139 pounds which is one pound less than mine.
good old dell it is why i buy there stuff time and time again.
i will finally add i have decided against taking any warranty because i dont need three years worth. i will more than likely sell it pretty soon and only need a years cover maximum. although the warranty has resale value i simply dont think it will add much to the second hand price.
I may yet change my mind over the weekend and buy it anyways because the price is so good but i just wanted to say dell came up with the goods in a round about way so top marks.
They have agreed to sell my parents the warranty at that price even if i decide not to take it.
great company i think with a great service. if i was planning on keeping the laptop i wouldnt hesitate because at that price it is a steal. -

Trust me, when it comes to alienware, its EXTREMELY beneficial to have extended warranty. Parts on this beast are expensive then other laptops. -

I just had a problem with my disk drive, and while on the phone, the lady asked me if I wanted an extra year for $300, but I would get an upgrade from 6 to 8 ram. It was a deal at the time apparently. Not really sure if its worth it. Anyone know if theres some way to get it cheaper?

Well I just phoned alienware regarding my m14x R1 and have been quoted some BIG numbers for extending my warranty!!?
I bought my laptop last November (in the UK) from Dell so that standard (next business day) warranty expires the same time this year.
They've just quoted me for the same warranty:
1 year £175
2 years £375
3 years £560
So it becomes more expensive for extending it for a longer time rather than less? lol
Can any of you guys put me in touch with a rep from the UK who can offer a decent offer (preferably over 3 years) rather than these crazy prices?
edit: Sorry I just read danm5411 had exactly the same quotes. lol. Did you get anything sorted in the end?? -
