    Hi,

Basicly everywhere i've searched leads me to this forum! so any help appreciated!

Long story short, my copy of windows 7 decided to go wrong...Tried installing it again with the disk that comes with the laptop and the cd was scratched beyond use

does the M14x come with a image on the recovery partition already?? i've installed vista for now but when i view the recovery partition and show hidden files all i can see is a few small files

I've tried using the vista cd in repair mode to find the image with no luck, im in the process of downloading windows 7 what are the chances of using that to restore it back to how it was?

I'll try to help you but just curious...

The DVD the M14x came with came scratched already or it had an accident?

The M14x does come with a recovery partition called (Alienrespawn) but if you installed Vista over the original Windows 7 copy installed (like you are stating), you might have deleted the recovery partition.

When the computer boots, Press F8 repeatedly and go into "Repair your computer" or "repair windows" I can't remember which one it is.

Then select Alienrespawn which should be the last option.

If it's not there then you might have deleted the recovery partition.

    thanks,

It came scratched! id never used it before and was still sealed yet i took it out and was badly sctrached

Well When installing vista i left the recovery partition intake, however the copy of vista is not from dell so surely no alienrespawn option would show?

Ok setup fails "RPSetup error 1" I checked the log and i see

    [2011-05-26 22:03:08] INFORMATION : Factory.WIM/BASE.WIM/BASE.INP not found

This is stupid because there is 6GB of space used on the recovery partition so on there somewhere should be the restore image

I say delete the partition, download one the win7 iso from here, and activate using the Genuine sticker on the bottom of your comp. Then just reinstall drivers. That's what I did.

Question: Why did you install Vista over Windows 7?

Ah. Well then I'd take your advice, and just download another copy of Win7.

Don't upgrade though. You loose a fair chunk of performance if you do that. You're much better off doing a clean install.
