A friend of mine has had some cooling issues on his Alienware 14 recently. The fans on the laptop would go crazy and spin at >80% as soon as he puts any sort of CPU usage down but the air being blown out isn't hot.
I did a realtemp/prime95 stress test and I noticed that while the 1st, 2nd, and 4th core all held about the same 70C under full load, the 3rd core was spiking to over 90C erratically. When I stopped prime95, the 3rd core held around 80C for 15 seconds, decreasing slowly after that while the other cores dropped to ~40C.
My intuition tells me that the CPU needs to be re pasted, and that's on the schedule for tomorrow. I've read the repair manual and have a good idea on how to get to the CPU and cooling system, but are there any tidbits that I should know before I move ahead?

haven't seen any teardown videos of the new 14, 17 or 18. Saw a video on the 18 on AW youtube channel but it really isn't a step by step.

I just finished re-pasting my CPU / GPU and saw some good improvements in temps (around 8-10C lower on the CPU and maybe 5C on the GPU). I used the Dell reference manual for help:
