Hey guy! I was thinking about upgrading my Ram to Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX. I was wondering if it would make a difference when play games like Starcraft 2. So far it plays fine with max setting except every once in awhile i lag a little. I minimized the game and noticed that I was using 92% of my ram so that could be why that's happening. Any thoughts?

You may see a increase in performance simply from the higher amount of ram (if your going to 8GB from 4GB). I personally think the performance difference is measureable, not noticeable, except when using Intel Graphics...but you have dedicated graphics.

I personally have the Kingston 8GB 1866 memory, and even my laptop runs at 1866 speed, If your going to spend the money, get the faster 1866 memory.

Hey guys, I had a question regarding the 2630QM at stock ram speeds, and the 2720QM at 1600/1866MHz. Keeping the amount of Ram [4/8GB] same, how much of a performance boost is visible in real-world tasks? I'm not particularly interested in FutureMark, 3DMark scores and likewise, I'm interested in the impact on gaming..

As in, does it give you a >5~7fps boost in today's games?

Ram and cpu upgrades for the m14x don't really boost game performance a lot, even if you get the best. All you want from your ram and cpu is to not be a bottleneck for your system/graphics card. And the 2630qm with 1600mhz ram is really all you need. You may see a difference in your 3DMark score, but it's going to be slight, and probably not worth the extra money. I noticed that the gt555m also works great in 1366x768 resolution, and okay in 1600x900. Not saying you shouldn't get the upgraded resolution, because windows itself looks great in it. But keep in mind that you can lower it to get better frame rates in high demanding games. But the kingston hyperX ram on newegg is cheap for 8 gigs. And much cheaper and probably a better quality than the ram you get from dell.

So what you're saying is, get the 2630 since its enough, and the 2720 isn't worth the $150 premium, since its not gonna give a noticeable boost right? I was under the impression its more future proof...

Anyway, is there a chance I can upgrade the CPU manually on this thing?

I really dont know about manually changing the cpu. I would maybe think yes, if it's not soldered to the motherboard. But you can always overclock the cpu and the gpu, might want to watch out for heat. But in my opinion, the 2720 isn't worth it to me. And id be worry more about the gpu being future proof than the cpu.

hmmm yeah, and the gpu can't even be upgraded manually, Dell have taken care of that for us by having it soldered in nicely!

jeez i'll just settle for a ram+ssd upgrade.

The 2720 in benchmarks has shown a good speed increase over the 2630. Whether that is worth the fairly reasonable price upgrade depends entirely on what you do with your laptop. Sure, most games won't really see a huge difference (I've heard SC2 does get a bit of a bump since it can be very CPU intensive with sh*tloads of units on screen), but many other CPU-bound activities will see a boost.
Can't overclock most of these mobile i7 CPUs as they are all multiplier locked. I think only the top end 2920XM might be unlocked, similar to the K-series desktop CPUs.
