Hello, I have an R1 and I just upgraded to windows 8. Everything is working well (I had to reinstall Bluetooth driver). But the touchpad seems to have difficulties recognizing the side swipes (from the right for charms bar, and from the top for menus). I think it has always had a worse recognition around the edges but I think it could be a driver or configuration problem. It recognizes the swipes but I have to swipe 3-4 times for it to work. Has someone had better luck at configuring it or with different drivers. (Of course I updated the synaptics drivers to the latest ones from the synaptics website. I also played with the palm rejection, sensitivity,.... settings. (the R2 might have the same touchpad too). Other multitouch gestures seem to work ok.

I own R1 as well and facing the same issue and really depressed :-( when I see the low end laptops performing pretty smooth. Even R2 faces the same issue. I guess someone needs to tweak the registries to get all the gestures to work. And it has to be the Alienware support team. I wonder when i would be able to enjoy Windows 8 completely. I dont wish to sell it off for such a silly reason.

If you get a solution please post it here for others.

    Thanks

I have been using Windows 8 on my R2 for a few weeks now, and I find that the right gesture ( charms bar ) is the only one working for me, it registers every time while the two other almost never work.

Seems that there`s definetely some Driver issue with Windows8. I have the Problem that the touchpad Driver does not work at 1 of 2 times. Then all the Options within the synaptics tool are gone and the two finger scroll and others do not work (like rigth now).

I use a program called "TwoFingerScroll" which smoothens out the horrible two finger scrolling
    from Synaptic.

Are you guys using the official Dell or the Synaptics driver?
    Mine never crashes under Win8...

But the M14x touchpad also seems to have SEVERE problems with pinch-to-zoom...

I'm using the latest Synaptics because it has support for Win8. It's very stable (has never crashed). I'll try the twofingerscroll program but it is manageable (the bouncing while scrolling), the thing we're looking for is the side swipes to work which are very important in the windows 8 experience (better then using shortcuts all the time).

Just wondering if your using touch check? touch check makes the edges of the trackpad less responsive in case you knock it while typing but it might be too aggressive which makes the gestures not work. Also I assume that the side swipes has been enabled in the synaptics drivers?

yes, I've played with palm check and left it lowest but it doesn't have an option to disable it all (doesn't seem to have any effect lowering and rising the palm check sensitivity anyway), side swipes are enabled and they work but you have to try 5-6 times (which defeats the purpose).
