A family member of mine really likes the 17 I just received however thinks its too big and wants a new 14. Here in Canada Dell has a Labor Day and Student Offer of $200 off which brings a basic 8gb, 4700, 765m to $1340 taxes included however this is the lower res non 1080p model. There is absolutely no option to upgrade to 1080p and the only option is the "next tiered" system which is $1800 which is out of his price range and IMO a bit much for what you are getting for the extra $450.

This seems strange since I paid $1900 for my 17 with a 780m/16gm ram/1080p. How does Dell think that is a competitive price for someone wanting to get into a AW 14?

Spoke with a few reps and chatted and none of them can "add" the 1080 screen onto the base $1340 model.

Back in the m17x and m14x days you could start at the bottom and add/remove whatever you want. This is driving customers away, he is a bit annoyed and really wanted an AW. With cash in hand he is forced to look elsewhere which is really sad in the eyes of Dell.

Anyone else in the same boat or can share a similar experience on a way to resolve this ?

Maybe someone could share if they did receive the bottom tier machine with a 1080 screen and what the total cost of the system was. This may be a long day talking to reps until someone is willing to configure it that way.

Again. I called 2 agents this morning and chatted with one. I want the base AW 14 with a 1080p screen but they all tell me Dell has taken away the ability to customize. IF I want the 1080p screen I MUST upgrade to 16GM RAM and Blu-Ray Drive for an additional $500.

I have $1500 today to purchase a computer and Dell doesn't want my money, they are only interested in up-selling me. Seems like priorities at Dell are a bit screwed up.

Just to share prices. I have a saved config in my cart for $1300 after taxes with the lower end screen. All I want is the upgrade the screen to 1080p but in order to do that, I must buy the next tier machine which is $1850 after tax along with a bunch of extras I don't want. Dell doesn't get how $550 is a lot of money?

Looking at the 17s and 18s it seems to be the same way, they don't want you picking the base and adding things on. The only problem is that the next tier is priced so high due to several extras that may not be wanted.

Its a sad day when Dell doesn't want my money, I guess I will have to look elsewhere. What a terrible sales experience.

I just got a call back from a manager who told me word for word "I'm sorry we can't add 1080p screen onto the base configuration because its not in the drop down, I can't select it".... and that was it.

I guess Dell doesn't want money.....

Yep, I wanted another CPU, the 4800 instead of the 4700, but just 8 GB RAM and no optical drive...
The excuse I got was that they have prebuilt models with just the customizing option you see online for "fast processing"...

I'm done with them and going to order a Clevo 13" W230ST which costs less and I even can raid the 2 mSATA slots.

Its probably easier to stock a limited number of models. And then its like a car - if you want heated seats, gotta buy the heated mirrors and cruise control. Its a 2 fold benefit for Dell, 0 benefit (negative "benefit" actually) for the customer.

Deal of the day today ends in 5.5 hours. AW 14 with everything you would want for $1499.99 then you can use coupon 26RQBG79WGBZV$ and bring it down to $1399.99. I am a little tempted to pull the trigger on this one myself :)

XANIUS, you are awesome!!! I snagged this deal with 45 minutes to go before it expired! Funny thing is, I didn't know it existed, nor did the sales MANAGER I spoke to today! Unreal!

I got the i7-4700, 16GB RAM, 765M, 1080p Panel AND 64 SSD Caching Drive + 750gb all for $1299. I used the coupon you posted along with an additional $100 off I had as an e-coupon.

The similar "tiered" configuration is $1800 and it doesn't even include the 64GB caching drive! All it has additional is the Wireless AC, in place of Killer wireless N and the Blu-Ray drive. I can't see the $600 difference in value.

Order is placed and estimated delivery is in 2 weeks!! Best part is I didnt have to deal with any reps or managers which has proven to be the most difficult part.

    Thanks again!

I am so glad you were able to get that deal!! I was actually laying in bed on my phone when I saw it and had remembered reading your post about an hour before. I had to get up and make a post about the deal. You really cannot beat $1299 for that machine.

Dell.ca is running a 12 days of Dell sale, so the deals are posted on their site. There are 10 days left, so I bet they will post a similar deal again before it is done.

Also make sure to use a coupon from the site posted below as most people are not aware that they exist.

There is a AW 17 on the deals today which looks pretty good for $1699.99. If you use the $100 coupon from the site in my previous post you can grab it for $1599 or if you add more warranty and get the price above $1799.99 you can use a $150 off coupon.

Here is the link to the daily deals. This is a Dell.ca, so if you are not in Canada you might not be able to get it.
