Hi, I'm new to the forum and was looking for some help. I purchased an alienware m14x r2 with 3rd gen i7, 6gb of ram, and the 1gb nvidia gt650M gpu.
I downloaded portal off of steam and from testing with fraps found out it was only running 30-35 fps. I was wondering what the cause was and how to optimize it. Thank you for any help.

Have you Whitelist the game into NV Control Panel? The Guide can be found in my sig, because I think your M14x is running on the Integrated GPU, not the GT650M. And I think Portal's game .exe file is in this path " D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\[username]\portal ", in there you would find "hl2.exe" click to whitelist that game. The path on your laptop maybe different because I partition my HDD and install Steam on the drive D.

Thank you. It was actually just because I was running on battery. I plugged it in and it jumped up to 85-110 fps.

Yeah, that's pretty much explain everything, because when you are on Battery, the GPU and the integrated GPU will be both downclock to save power so dont expect a fast and smooth gameplay when you're on battery.
