ok lets get this straight, i bought my m14x a few months back, it was great machine, i loved it, as time passed i noticed overheating of my laptop but ignored it, then soon my game's performance started degrading day by day, then i noticed that when i play games they run well, but after sometime they are choppy and becomes unplayable, i press escape and pause it, and then run the game, it runs good for about a minute but after that it lags, i formatted my pc for good and thought it might solve problem, my games run better than previously for about a week and then again it started lagging, but after another week, my each game lagged like hell, even on lowest resolution and settings, sorry i forgot to mention that my PC overheats every time game starts to lag, nowadays when i play game, my laptop's temperature rises to 100c instantly, every game is unplayable now, i think its hardware fault, i have tried basic things like running with nvidia and all that stuff but nothing seems to help, plz guys help me out of my misery!

take off the bottom cover and blow the dust out of the fan through the exhaust vent, also turn off turbo boost

There are several ways you can reduce the M14X's heat:

    - Cleaning the fans (air compression can) ---> Varies
    - Thermal Paste (IC Diamond 24 Carat Thermal Compound) CPU/GPU ---> -10c reduction
    - Notebook Cooler (see my notebook cooler thread in the M14X section) ---> -7c-ish reduction
    - Disabling Turbo Boost (in BIOS) ---> Varies

I use to get 90s everytime I played then I blew some compressed air trough the exhaust vent, and now it doesn't go above 70c.

i knew what most answers were going to be.....lol, ok i tried blowing off dust right now, but sorry barely any effect, i have already turned off power boost, cant do thermal paste now, but sure will try if u guys say so, but i dont think it is just overheating coz my laptop seems to have some other problem with overheating,my every application lags, not only just games, even when i am browsing it lags so much, when i am in menu of games like crysis 2, it lags like, hell, cursor moves like 10 F.p.S on lowest, and games lags way more than that, another thing i have noticed is that when i used to play game on bed such that its vents were covered, i experienced overheating very early, but if it was on desk or place where its vents are not blocked then it performed well, but this was only a few weeks back, now my games lags everywhere, plz guys suggest something, i am surprised why any1 has not posted something like this,, i still think that it depends on environment also, guys that i know in U.S barely have any problem with this laptop, i am from india, any good thing here will turn to bad, so much pollution and dust in environment, plz suggest something.

Try to restore to factory settings and see if that helps, before that do a backup even if is bad keep your backup and then restore to factory settings.

Then if the problem is fixed you know your backup is useless (forgot to say move your important files so you can replace them after factory restore if everything is ok! If not just get your computer back with your back up and call dell!!! Good luck

restoring factory settings? , i have formatted my PC, so it is now on factory settings right? , i have lost alienware respawn and command centre after formatting, dell also havent given any disc for them, yeah i agree that it might be due to poor performance of cooling fan, but as i told its not just games, my whole PC lags like hell! , my in game menus, applications, even web browser lags, i will consult DELL about it, i hope that there must be some way to fix this,,,, one thing more i must tell is that its not just fan, when i formatted my PC for first time, my games stopped lagging for about a week and ran smooth, but after some weeks ,same problem.

If you have done all you say you have then it's either the fan or the cpu it's self. Either not enough cooling or there is actual damage. I work on laptops all day and I have seen this a few times and it's one, the other or both.

You have to create your own recovery media for alien respawn. Aside from viruses it's probably just faulty parts. You're not supposed to lag and overheat if your only app open is a browser.

You should done a backup first as i mentioned, Comand center you can dawnload from Dell

And to restore your laptop you should use Alien respaw so you dont louse your Respaw partition

Any way if after restoring your system to factory if you are still lagging even on browser, that means you do have a problem and has nothing to do with virus as your system is clean

Also has nothing to do with your fans as on web browser you dont need does fans to go 100 percent of use, beside you can perfectly feel if your fans are runing so i dont think is your fans eather

Call dell and try to make them do something, lie if you want tell them is really hot even you can feel it while typing.

Hope they beleave you and send a tecitian do something serious

    Good luck keep posting

Sounds like either your heatsink for your gpu isnt making good contact with the gpu die if the fan is still working. Not sure on exacly how the m14x heatsinks are though. Call dell and have them help you troubleshoot as others have mentioned so you can get the propper replacement parts and get this fixed. :)
