I just bought an M14x from Tigerdirect and it got in about an hour ago. The backlit keyboard worked for about 20 minutes. I was playing with AlienFX, then set it at all red.

I closed the lid, opened it up. Entered my windows password and since then my keyboard LED's (JUST THE KEYBOARD) haven't been on. I haven't installed ANYTHING extra except google chrome. Like I said this laptop is only 1 hour old.

I hope there's some advice someone can give me. Thanks!

EDIT: To add, I called DELL and they told me they can't help me unless I find out who distributed this Laptop and I would have to call TD to get info on who they bought it from because it's not under my name. Any tips?

Have you tried pressing "FN" + the "PRT SCRN aka ALIEN FX" key above the backspace.

Both keys need to be pressed at the same time.

Also make sure your power plans in Alienware have the lights turned on.

Yes, pressing the hotkeys only turns all the other lights on and off. And the power settings have them enabled. ALIENWARE text , alienhead logo, mouse border, and front lights are on. Just not the keyboard :((.

Also, the Alienhead doesn't change colors in AlienFX... just stays blue :(.

OK, just got off with a DELL rep again. This guy was way cooler than the other two guys. He acctually did an ownership transfer with me and even put the companies name on there without me having to contact Tigerdirect.

It says I have to wait up to 15 business days for the ownership transfer to occur, but when it changes to my name they will be able to send me another keyboard as the one I have now is faulty.

I'll keep you guys updated on this.

Also, for those who've bought the m14x via Tigerdirect, their Alienwares are registered under SYX Distribution.

Thanks for the help guys. This has set a bad impression of Alienware on me, but I'll be patient.

good luck dude, sucks that it broke out of the box but i'm glad Dell is taking care of. Make sure you get a case number incase something happens and the part isn't shipped or you have issues with the new keyboard. ;)

Did you try a driver reinstall of the alienware command center? Maybe that will help. Remember to download it from the dell site and not to use the one on the driver disc that came with your system.

I checked the version that is installed and the version on DELL's website and it was the exact same. I didn't think there would've been a difference, but I'll go ahead and do that anyway just to make sure.

Well I remember some people have issues with it being corrupted or something like that, a reinstall of the same version helped, hope it works for you.

Tried it and it didn't work. I called Dell and instead of waiting those 15 days the transfer changed today and the part was shipped today as well. I should be getting it fixed early next week.

    Thanks for the help!

I had the same problem. This is how I fixed it. On the lower right hand corner of your screen click on show hidden icons button. then right click on the Alienware AlienwareFX icon and click the Dim Lighting Zones that should fix your problem.
