Ordered a 14 last night. upgraded the GPU and the screen. I'm feeling worried about the fan noise though :( I hope its not as bad as the r1 and r2. I had both and they were really loud when gaming.

I'm interested in seeing reviews regarding the cooling system. I realize it's tough to fit separate cooling fans for the GPU & CPU in a 14" chassis, but single fan solutions just don't seem to cut it these days. I'm so sick of overheating with my current Dell that I need to be sure it's not going to be a problem with the replacement.

I ordered one on June 11th, and the estimated ship date is July 19th. I guess it is more of a "pre-order" than a real order. Kind of disappointed with the delay in the shipping. I wish that when you are purchasing it they would let you know it would be 6 weeks before it would actually be shipped... And by the way, there is a $150 off coupon you can use... at least on dell.ca

I ordered it with the following specs:

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M - NotebookCheck.net Tech

no bench marks yet but it only has 384 shader cores compared 768 in the gtx 765. So you can imagine the performance difference. 750 SLI? hahah. maybe not.

but for example a single 780 is about the same as 765 SLI in some games. so it makes no sense to get the 765 sli in the m18

The only thing I have a problem with with this laptop, is the weak GPU. I want a 780M so badly. But an AW 17 with 780M is €900 more expensive, and I realy like the small size of the AW 14.

    @1nstance,

I agree with you but, the cooling requirements for the 780m is a lot more compared to the 765m. The 765m from what I've been seeing (Reviews/Internet) is like a ~30% increase from the 660m.

BTW I'm jealous bro that you live in Amsterdam, I went there with a few buddies of mine for the weekend. OMG place was like heaven man...

I'm getting the upgraded display and upgraded GPU, and I'm thinking about adding 16 GB ram later this year since I will be using alot of photoshop and after effects.
Does anyone know if you will need an external cooling when you're not overclocking? I'm thinking of getting one just for at home.
I was looking at het notepal x2, does anyone have experiences with it or does anyone know an better external cooler?
thanks for taking your time to answer!

Yeah that cooling is great, personally if your using a laptop as a desktop you should probably connect that to a laptop cooler. But if a laptop depends on a cooler, then to be honest that's bad engineering design. It should be within thresholds during stress test and provide adequate cooling. Your 16GB option would be a great idea, though I'd probably just get the 8GB for now and just install and buy your own RAM. I'm assuming the back-plate is easily removable and your able to do RAM upgrades without any problem.

It sure is a good card, don't get me wrong, but it isn't powerfull enough for the games I want to play (Sleeping Dogs, Skyrim with graphics mods, New Vegas with graphics mods, Crysis (1&2, 3 sucks :<) with graphics mods etc).

It sure is man, it sure is :p.

Not sure what you are trying to say here (allthough I know pretty much nothing about computers. So honestly, I don't even know what you are talking about. Although I do know what MXM is).

You will be able to run all those games really well just not at max. I reckon you will be able to run Crysis 2 at 1080p at high/medium settings. Crysis 3 probably at 1600*900 at Medium (still looks great). Also Skyrim at 1080p with high/medium.

I won't be playing Crysis 3 though :p. But medium/high is not good enough for me. I realy want to play ultra graphics with some modifications and ENB's. I gues I will go for the AW 17.

Yeah you will need the AW 17 if you want to max out FPS games.

Though even a fully loaded AW17 might not fully max out Crysis 3 at 1080p. Its a mega demanding game at ultra settings.

Dude, I won't play Crysis 3. Read carefully :p. Only 1&2. Allthough looking at GPUBoss.com and comparing the 675M, 680M, 770M, and 780M, the 765M looks pretty good. Atleast, it's pretty much better than a 675M.

I know! It's just that you have to remember FPS games are very demanding. Even the 780m (best current mobile graphics) is still a mobile graphics. Its a powerful GPU but to really max out FPS games at 1080p that run butter smooth you need a desktop.

For example you said you want to play Sleeping Dogs. On ultra on the 780m runs at 30FPS which is borderline smooth or not.

Keep in mind, the different levels of AA don't matter that much in that game and will almost half your FPS. So it should a bit higher, since I won't max out AA.

I just don't get why they can't put a 770M in the AW 14. That would allready be good enough for me. I mean, I might aswell get an MSI for the same amount of money, but I realy like the new Alienware desings,

Yeah a 770 would be great in the AW 14. Guess its all dowm to power & heat issues.

Thanks for your response! Well I'm getting the notepal x2 then, and if I figure out how, I will try to make some temperature benchmarks with and without the notepal to make it's performance clear with the alienware 14! :)

I ordered my Alienware 14. Base model, but I upgraded the screen to IPS and video card to the 765. I was VERY disappointed that I had no option to upgrade to the Blu-ray player, without being forced to bundle it with an extra 8GB of RAM and a more expensive wireless option. Why should I have to spend a few hundred extra dollars just for Blu-ray?

I called a rep and he couldn't add it in. Likewise, there are absolutely no discounts offered so I couldn't talk them down slightly on the higher model, despite already owning 3 other Alienware computers. bummer. I was hoping he would shave off $125 and meet me half way. not a chance.

Don't forget that a 14" 1080p Screen with 150 PPI won't really need AA at all.

If they keep changing the EDD I'd call up and complain. They may knock some more $$$ off for you. Some people getting delayed past the initial EDD are getting $100 Dell gift cards.

If you have your original invoice with 7-2-13 on it you might get a $100 gift card.
