Ps new to the site sorry if I done anything bad eg not posting in the right section, I have searched around just abit confused.
Hey guys basically I brought a Alienware M14 R2 without doing my research, yeah stupid I know but never thought it was needed as all my friends highly recommended them for the reliability and performance.
Anyways as I been waiting for the damn thing to be dispatched I been looking around the net and found that these laptops have a common problem of the motherboard failing, some say it was only a bad patch, some confusing forums makes me think that it was the older R1 models with the issue and some say it was only a problem with the units that were ordered during the periods of November - December.
What do you guys think?
Is it the r1 with the problem or both?
Surely if the problem has been around in the last model it should be fixed with the new r2 version right?
Has dell turned a blind eye to the problem?
Should I cancel my order while I can?
Any input would be appreciated if not thanks for reading

Haven't seen any huge mass problems like that lately, but I don't own an m14x so It might have happened Idk.

Mine has been great since i got it just after it was first released. I have had a couple of alienwares and Dell are pretty good at fixing them if there is an issue.

I haven't had a problem with my M14x R2 since I got it about a couple of months ago. Take what you read here with a grain of salt since most people who post will be the ones that have problems/issues. It tends to skew the perception that the problem is of a bigger scope than what they actually are.

My R2 has performed flawlessly this past month. I haven't even noticed the usual USB 3.0 issues (knock on wood!) This is the 2nd Alienware system I've owned and I am glad I purchased it. My old m11x R1 died suddenly, but tech fails occasionally- I guess that's par for the course. I'd say stick with it, it's a great little laptop!

I love my m14x R2 I owned the m15x with gtx 560m before and this laptop is way better and lighter you'll love it just don't expect to be running the newest big fancy graphic titles on ultra but you can get high and maybe ultra on some out today. R2 is ready better than R1 in so many ways....enjoy and motherboard failing could be to Oc hope you got accidental cuz that ready you don't have to worry.

I got my M14x r2 about a week ago and have been impressed overall. I ran into a problem with the GPU early on but it seems to have fixed itself by reverting to an old driver. Besides that I've been very happy. I think the motherboard problem was mostly with the r1s. I haven't read about any motherboard problems with the r2s.

You should not worry about it, you made a good decision going for that platform. The major issue is that people post a lot when there are bad things to say but just looking at this thread can tell you that there are many satisfied users with it
-
People mainly go to forums because they have problems. There are probably more satisfied customers that just don't bother looking up forums because their system is working fine. Most problems you will encounter such as mobo failure is covered by the standard warranty.
What bothers me is that the m14xR1 has sataIII instability issues and the way they dealt with it is they release a new bios that limited speeds to sataII. They may also deal with future problems in a simillar manner. -
You will love this computer if you get the 1600x900 screen. I still use this and my M11xr1 all the time. I have never had a problem with my m14xr1, the screen hinge problem with m11xr1 Alienware took care of and made me very happy.
When my m11x battery started not to hold a charge I swapped the M14 and M11x batteries until I can order another one.
You did not make a mistake, you just bought a great computer! -

Well, my M14 R2 died after three (3) days of use. I never gamed it. It mysteriously croked after a huge Windows update download was completed.
It's been in the Dell tech repair labs now for over a week. They replaced the motherboard, 750GB HDD, and who knows what else.
The manufacture date was April 04, 2012
They are telling me that they are running diagnostic test before they ship it back to me. They are making sure I don't get another lemon.
I've caught them lieing to me on four diffrent occasions -- I don't know if it was intentional or they are just totally unorganized.
I've been told its repaired then I get told its waiting parts then I'm told its under observation then I'm told they are replacing the HDD then they told me the motherboard had just been replaced and know its being placed on hold (what ever that means?)
Funny, every two days I call them they tell me the same thing:
" it should be ready in two days"
So dam frustrating, especially as it is a brand new laptop.

It was a excellent laptop when it worked.

My Dell Latitude D630 USB 2.0 use to turn on then off continuously for up to 20 minutes.
That use to drive me freaking insane.
I thought it was some kind of psycho virus that was designed to screw up the USB ports.
Bob.
New user brought m14x was it a mistake?
