Just got my m14x about a week ago, and wanting to update the driver from the stock dell driver. I seen the newest beta patches available (285.37, 285.38) don't require the change of the .inf file. Was curious, are these patches built specifically for BF3, and do I need to use an older driver and just use the modded .inf file? Or are either of these patches suitable?

285.27 looks like a good choice, think I will stick with that one for the time being, until the next driver comes along. Since I haven't played BF3 beta yet, and probably won't mess with the game until it is officially released.

for some reason the installation always cuts out at the half way point and says several features failed to install.. I know this doesnt require a modified inf file but the new driver wont install for me.

I had the same problem. I let the computer search for the new hardware first then I install the driver.

When i downloaded the drivers it worked for a day or two and then it did the same thing. I called alienware support and a representative explained to me that you can only download the drivers on the dell website or it could damage your graphics card. I was told to take out the battery, hold down the power button for 2 minutes, and reinstall the 267 drivers on dell's website to fix the problem.

That worked, and BF3 still works, but it crashes every round or so, not to mention a couple of other games such as Heroes of Newerth no longer work =/

I got 285.27 (beta) to work without the inf mod, and it still switches to the integrated when on battery.
Not had any crashes on DA2 or Crysis 2 when using this driver either.

Be careful dudes, I installed the 285.27 and makes me sh*t on my pants. I rebooted my m14x and it's started on secure mode and showed me several errors of alienware On-screen and stuff. I could not uninstalled it, so I changed the system configuration to run on normal mode, then I put the lappy in the last recovery point(before I installed the driver) and fixed the problem. I'm afraid of having damaged my gpu.. When I finish my exams I'll test it to be sure of don't have damaged my precious gpu.

I am using the newest ones with no problem. Those of you who have problems probably have some other driver or software which causes a conflict with the NVidia driver.

Every m14x owner should call Dell and ask them to update their 6 month old video driver so we do not have to. I'm sure if they received a few hundred calls they may have one of their techs allocated to this task. I mean we did buy their product at a premium price and it is a gaming laptop so the video card is an important aspect of it. Let me know if anyone else thinks the same.
    Take care

To be honest, all the games i'm running have been fine with the Dell drivers, the main isue as far as I can see is putting enough load on the graphics that the Nvidia card kicks in, it then automatically switches from the Intel to the Nvidia...

EG... Empire total war, would only allow my settings on Medium, I changed the script to allow me to change the settings, everything on Ultra, the Nvidia is working fine. Due to putting the load on the graphics card to let it kick in :) Unless someone is telling me the Intel graphics will run on Ultra (they wont btw lol)

    Hope this helps :)

Hi Zack02, sorry to hear you had trouble with the beta driver, did you do a clean install or and express install?
I did an express install over the stock Dell/Alienware driver, however, I had updated my integrated driver to the latest one from the Intel website before installing the Nvidia beta 285.27.
all my other drivers are stock Dell/Alienware ones, and I am running 64bit system.
I guess there may be some 'driver not signed' issues for the beta that may be causing a problem with UAC or other security software?
