I recently got Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and the game runs at 60fps but sometimes if there's a lot of action going on it dips to around as low as 10fps (according to fraps)?

I've whitelisted the game and made sure its running as it should so I'm not sure why the game is losing the fps (it doens't matter if I set all the games options to low or not)?

Is the game just unoptimized for pc? I have no other issues running newer games like Dirt 3 etc?

My game is on origin and it says its upto date with the latest patches?

Anbody have a fix for this?

    Thanks

Looks like is it CPU throttling. Check your CPU temp?

I'm at work for another 8 hours but will check temps later.

Excuse my ignorance but what's cpu throttling? ...is this something I can resolve for this game?

Check out this article to learn what is a CPU throttling. For me, even on the highest setting, the game never dip below 20 though. Although I have a cooler on, the temp for both CPU and the GPU never reach 80C as well, average max for CPU is 78-79C while the GPU is 65C.

I've not overcloecked my m14x or anything and my other games play fine on decent settings?

I'll check later but (as per your recommendation in another thread) I've just ordered a cooler so if heat is the problem causing throttling then hopefull that will sort it out?

As a quick fix try disabling turbo boost via bios or throttlestop. This should stop the lag. I had the same issue TS sorted it for me

I just got the coolmaster u2 coolpad and by using this it seems to have fixed my issues with the game (I can play with hd textures and everything on max and its now runs at a pretty much consistant 60fps throughout).

    Good times. :)

Well after some more extensive testing with the u2 cooling pad my temperatures on all 4 cores were still hitting between 90 and 99 degress when playing some games for brief periods of time. :(

I phoned Dell and after updating my bios and then running some tests for them (on the gpu and cpu and supplying them the logs) they are now sending a technican round on Monday to do a thremal repaste (I guess they didn't do this right when they replaced my motherboard affer 1 months use back in later November?).

So this is the second time a technican has been needed to come out and sort for my machine since I bought it late November. Bad times. :(

You're not the only one who had technician coming to replace stuff on your laptop, me personally had more than 10 times coming to replace/fix stuff on my laptop and I dont really mind it since it is a service and it is free. Though, still it is weird that you have taken steps that I have taken and the problem doesnt fix, so dont forget to let us know after the technician repaste the thermal paste. But just to clarify, have you disable the Turbo Boost found inside the BIOS? Because it will help you reduce the temp a lot for me it help reducing about 5C - 10C.

That was the first thing the dell technican on the phone said to do before the cpu and gpu tests. I used a compressed air can but it made no difference.

Yes its great that they come out and correct the problems but to be honest these problems shouldn't exist on a new (and expensive) peice of hardware thats only a few months old?

I haven't disabled the turbo boost before (dell never gave that as instruction to me on the phone)... but I just did that via the power management (reducing it to 99%) and it has reduced my temps by about 5c. I've still got the technicain coming out on Monday for the thremal repaste though so I'll report back again once he's stripped my machine down and redone the paste to see how good the results are then.

Thanks all for the advice! :D

New laptop doesnt mean it is perfect, it is just that the chance of failure is lower than average, in fact all computer hardware are the same, problem can happen at any time.

For the Turbo Boost, this is a community or Forum advice, I learn this trick from a fellow user here in NBR and at first I dont really want to mess around with the BIOS but after many report that it does help a lot so I try it and get the same satisfaction as those who tried before me, and this is why I want to help and share that knowledge to you to try it.

The repaste is really did a great reduce, due to my last problem with the motherboard and got replaced, compare to the old motherboard, the temp is significantly reduce, before the replacement the temp always reach the 80-90C point, but with this new motherboard and repaste, temp on CPU never go above 80C, and both are having the Turbo Boost turn off.

The technican has just fixed my machine... he apparently replaced the fan/heat sink. I'll report back once I finish work with the new temp results.

I was speaking to him saying that I'm thinking of extending my warranty as I currently only have the 1 year standard and he recommended not to ring them until nearer to when my warranty expires as all they would want to do is still try to sell me it for full the price. He reckoned I've just been unlucky though so far and that seeing I've had a couple issues with my machine that they'd do some sort of deal.

Well he seems to have fixed it as after running tests for some time my max temps are now 76c for 2 cores and 73c for the other 2 (running with coolling pad as before)! :)

Need for speed and battlefiled 3 now play perfect!

I got there in the end! lol

    happy days. :)

Thats with turbo disabled. I'll run my benchmark test again now with it enabled and report back.

With turbo I'm now getting max: 80c, 80c, 78c and 75c ...so I'll probably keep turbo on now seeing as the temps are so low. Need for Speed now plays without any hiccups too. :)

Thanks again to all who gave me advice in this thread.

Good to hear your problem is solved, however by reading the temp below, it is still not as good as mine, because my highest temp on 1 core is 78C, I guess it is maybe because of your higher CPU clockspeed. So how about the GPU? Did you monitor its temp too? And also did you OC?
