My m14x keeps dropping my mouse connection. It's a Razer Imperator, and occasionally the lights on the mouse will go completely dark and it stops responding to any input. Other times, only the movement will go undetected while the buttons all work fine (when this happens the lights on the mouse usually stay on). The problem occurs across all the USB slots as far as I know. Unplugging and reconnecting the mouse usually fixes the problem briefly but it does occur often enough to be a nuisance. Device manager shows no problems across the USB devices.

Is it likely to be a motherboard issue at all or is the mouse just on its way out? I have had this mouse for about 2 years.

It maybe because of the USB connector, because for me the USB 2.0 on my laptop tend to be unstable meaning the connection tend to be interrupted randomly. I also use an external mouse but not a razer, a ASUS ROG mouse connect to the USB 3 port and never had any connecting problem though.

sounds to me like an powersaving option of USB (triggered by driver/windows).

USB is a polling Bus-System, meaning the CPU will always have to ask the USB Bus if something is happening. Now devices can be disabled to safe energy (and polling). however if that occures for a HID, thats bad, cuz you need to wake the device up again (pluggin out/in, sometimes pushing buttons helps aswell).

    - easiest would be to take a linux live distro of you favour (ubuntu, mint, opensuse, whatever...) and check the behaviour in there.
    - maybe installing a control center/Driver of your mouse can help thus disabling that powersaving.

since the right 2 USB 3.0 ports are connected differently (thru the usb3.0 controller over pciE) there should be a difference in the behaviour. if not (like in this case), its propably not the m14x causing the error, leaving the options to either mouse or software.
