Hello. I was thinking of replacing my old motherboard with GT 555M for the new one with GT 650M. Can anyone advice me what is the model number of the R2 motherboard? Is it possible to upgrade my rig that way? Or in case anyone would know where is it possible to buy that board I'd love to find out. Or if you got any additional info all is welcomed.

    Thank you very much.

    MOBO 650M 2.0GB (Systems shipped w/ Win7) - Y7YHC

As far as I know the board fits, not sure about compatibility though as I haven't done it before.

Is it possible to order it directly from Dell? And it has same i7 CPU in it i guess no?

Also thanks for the reply :)

I too would be interested in this. Definitely update us on how it goes. Is the CPU on the motherboard or is it separate? And if it is on the motherboard, I believe I remember it's upgradable, so would it be possible to take the Sandy Bridge CPU and put it on the R2 motherboard?

I was just cleaning my laptop and had to take the board off to put on new paste so yes, CPU slot is on board, but you just take it off and put to new one. i7 should be compatible with both boards I believe.

Ivy and Sandy use the same socket, so you could switch your CPU without any problems... But they redesigned quite a few things concerning heat management, meaning that the heatsink from the R1 won't fit the R2 mobo. There maybe are other things that I don't know about, but if you really try it, let us know how it goes :)

Someone said the IO board had to be switched on the m18x R1 to R2 when they tried a mobo replacement. I honestly don't know anything about that, but just might be another thing to keep in mind.

Are you sure about the heatsink being different? I guess I could order R2 heatsink also if that is the case. I try to find some photos or R2 motherboard to see how different it looks like.

If you can upgrade the motherboard can you upgrade the GPU by upgrading the motheboard?

    I am, look at these:
    r1 heatsink.JPG
    m14x R1 heatsink
    r2 heatsink.jpg
    m14x R2 heatsink

Ordering the heatsink with it would be an option, but I still don't know whether it (mobo) will fit or not.

You will automatically, because the GPU is soldered to the motherboard -> Can't change mobo without changing GPU too.

Pretty much, the GPU comes with the board so you're upgrading both.

This of course is not covered under the warranty, tech support will only troubleshoot the original configuration.

Is changing the heatsink difficult/expensive? I'm just wondering if we're looking at another m11x case where essentially everything would have to be replaced. Too bad if it is like that, a 555M to 650M is a substantial upgrade

I did a quick ebay research, though I only found heatsinks for the R1, they go for between 30 ~ 50$ each.
I've never replaced one myself, but I think it won't be much different from a standard repasting procedure, just with swapped heatsinks at the end.
Still, I don't know if it all will fit in :(

It's a complete redesign so I highly doubt it. M14s would probably struggle with anything but medium on it.
