I had my screen replaced to fix the microphone problem, which it did.
On the other hand, it took two tries, since they sent the wrong screen the first time (lower resolution). Looked absolutely awful.
Next day had the right one installed. Microphone worked in both replacements.
This is costing them money too - funny they can't get it right. They told me that when the tag was transferred not all the configuration information comes through.

i have this problem but im in thailand! what do i do?!

Anymore updates? I'm still debating whether to open a ticket with the mic problem....just concerned that I'll get a refurb'd screen with the problem not fixed.....can anyone say that they had the replacement and it works aside from Sabbasolo?
Appreciate any feedback.
Thank you. -

3rd screen replaced - this time the correct resolution. But the hinged is cracked again!
And the microphone is still not fixed. Not pleased -
Serious? I just sent Dell an email to have it replaced...I'm obviously going to have problems... Can the dell rep reply as to why you are going through 3 replacements? This is ridiculous....

Hey everyone,
So here is my story on the mic problem. I too was affected and fustrated but I honestly got to say my experience was the best. I sent an email as indicated by Dell-Bill-on Dec 27. They called my on Dec 29 and was at my house with the part on Dec 30. They replaced it in 30 minutes and everything works. For how long I do not know but the service was excellent! Apparently the contractor that was sent to my house had 15 years experience so he knew his stuff. This was the second call out to Dell. The first being the squeaky keyboard which was replaced as quick as this one. I do not work for Dell but I can honestly say that they are great (this laptop was my first purchase) I hope everyone else has the same results!
Take care....

Hey guys, sorry to revive an old thread, but here's my story.
I received a new replacement from Dell - old one has been sent back.
Thought I'd start afresh, install SSD etc. tested mic, alls good.
Then, after having it for a few weeks, thought I'd test out the mic again for you know... JUST IN CASE... Andddd it's started to become muffled again
Not happy!
Spending so much money on a laptop, for such a simple but necessary thing such as the microphone to not work again!?
I'm not sure what to do now, as it is most certainly a hardware problem (which Alienware support team refuses to acknowledge everytime I call them up) any advice???
I urge people to test out their microphones to see if they have this problem, as I know some people wouldn't use the mic on a gaming laptop.
3 screen replacements, 1 entire laptop replacement - same problem... sigh -
Sorry to hear...I got mine replaced and it still works since my last post. If it fails I'll post in here again. Don't give up.

I spoke with the @DellCares team, and they have forwarded your contact information to the UK team. While you are waiting to hear from them, just make sure you have tried updating the latest webcam software (You can find the webcam software and procedure to run it from the following Knowledge Base Article: Alienware M14x Webcam Firmware Update Available | Dell). That might not fix it, but it will save you some time if you can confirm you already did it when they contact you. Please let me know how it goes.

My man Federico! Nice to have you aboard!
Folks,
Federico is an Alienware level 3 tech (L3). He is going to take some of the Alienware load here in NBR off my hands. He's a great guy, so help him work through his unfamiliarity with you guys. You won't be sorry. -
I updated all drivers from the website right after doing a clean install of Windows, so everything is up to date.
This is great news, to finally have somebody from Alienware L3 on these forums! Welcome
Thanks very much to yourself and especially Bill for helping me out on this problem. I love my m14x, I just hate the fact something so simple as the mic is setting it back. -

In regards to the issue, the next step unfortunately will be sending the LCD assembly and motherboard, also I can request the agent when placing the order, to leave to the Onsite some notes telling him to check the webcam Mic carefully and remove any foam over it.
Please let me know any update or inquiry,
Regards,

Same mic problem. Since I am in Brazil (which does not sell M14x), I guess I am screwed. ://////////////
-
What do I do. I have the same problem but i am in Australia. School Starts in 1 week and i have not fixed this problem yet. It has been going on for a year now!

If you tap the LCD near the webcam while looking at the "recording devices" volume levels, you should be able to see the change it noise levels.
If you can't see the noise levels changing, you might have a faulty mic. If you do however, you can try to tear down the LCD assembly and remove any plastic in front of the mic. -

We'll take care of it.
Mic problems.
