MX14 and NotePal U2 cooler with two fans

Hey there. New to the site. I have had my MX14 for a few months and never really played anything on it that would stress the machine. Since Skyrim came out I have been playing it a decent amount, though. My gpu is reading about 64-65C while playing. I decided to order a cooler. This is the actual one I ordered: NotePal U2 - Cooler Master - Leading Provider of Computer Case | Cooler | Power Supply. My question is where I should place the fans to get the best results. I believe they should be under the two vents on the bottom but I'm not sure as I'm pretty new to this. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

 

I put both of mine down in the center of the notebook (one on top of the other going up under the keyboard and trackpad). Not sure if this is best, but it always cools where it is hot there. I believe that the gpu/cpu are close to there and it keeps the bottom cool to the touch. The ram has all the cooling it need and the fan is just intaking cool air there so ti doesnt really make a difference if you put it in those too places. please correct me if I'm wrong.

 

If you put the fans inside the left vent, it will blow in cooler air for the laptop to cool itself with. So I would put one on each vent, because although the RAM stays cool enough, it goes straight into the rest of the case.

 

Hey guys i just ordered the U3 since i cant find U2 anywhere in my place, so i want to put 2 of the fans on the fans, but one more where should i put it ? Just in the middle of the machine ?

 

The only reason I bought a cooler (CM Notepal U2) is because of the high CPU temp, the GPU seem to be very stable, and I also notice that if the CPU's temp increase, the GPU temp is also increase and vice versa. And it does help a few degree, but after I turn the Turbo Boost (Which can be found in the BIOS) off, it's even able to reduce like another 5C-10C on top of the cooler effectiveness, so it's like 7C-15C when you combine it. Since I disable the Turbo Boost, the highest temp I ever see is 87C as before I even get the cooler, I used to reach 99C.

I got mine from Amazon, and you can also get one (in fact there're tons) on eBay, new or second hand alike, the third fan should be place the the bottom where the subwoofer is? Because if there's a hole, mean you can use it for venting as well, although it is not that large but at least better than none at all.

 

I just use the CoolerMaster Notepal U2 stand rather than the fans. It allows the laptop's own fan to draw in air more efficiently.

I think using the two external fans will just end up blowing a bunch of dust into the laptop.

 

I’m running the i5 cpu so I don’t think heat is as much of a problem as some people are experiencing. The cooler has yet to arrive so I’m just guessing that the air will be blowing toward the laptop and didn’t want to push air somewhere I shouldn’t. The vent on the left seems clear that it is released by the vent on the back of the machine. I do not think there is a fan on the vent on the right though. Is this correct?

 

Yes that correct, and on the right, it is just a design vent, if you open the case you will see that under that empty vent lay the 2 slot RAM. For me I position each fan on each vent so then on the left it would help pump more air in while the right it help cool the rest of the component as that right side there's no other way for the air to get out so it will help keep it cool down.

 

Thanks for the help, everyone. I just set the laptop up on a couple of iced tea caps until the cooler gets here. Just raising it that little bit seemed to keep it cool. After playing Skyrim for two hours the cpu and gpu were only in the low 60C's.

 

Hey everyone. Just wanted to follow-up with this post rather than make a new one. I've been loving my MX14, works great for me. I have recently got into SWTOR and enjoy playing it. There is a bit more stress on the system with this. The CPU monitor I have is showing a max of 80C on both cores, when I alt tab out it is showing about 68C as current temp while the game is running. The video card temp monitor is showing around 61-65C.

So, I'm looking for a better cooler than the Coolmaster U2 that I have now. What are some options for higher end coolers that work well with the MX14?

I think U2 is the best for the m14 for the moment. You can try installing fans for desktop computers to replace the original to for more air flow? Based on what i've read a repaste job with a high quality thermal paste will be a better investment in terms of reducing temps. Another fix would be blowing compress air through the vents to remove built up dust. I'm getting the same temps as you and I plan to do repaste or have it repasted when i find the time.

 

My U2 just came and I put the fans below the two vent openings. My temps didnt even move for 1 degree, this was really a disappointment for me. I got the same resulty as just raising the back of my laptop with an object.

 

What exactly are the temps you're getting? If you're at the 90's up, a good repaste would probably lower your temps more so than just adding a cooler and also turn off turbo boost. One possible reason why your temps are not being reduce by the cooler is that your laptop is partially clogged with dust, try blowing it with compressed air and see how that goes.

 

I have turboboost off and getting 86-90 max degree on cpu while playing games. Repaste would decrease my temps I really believe that but I kinda fear tearing my laptop apart. Dust can not be the case probably because I received my laptop 1 week before.

 

I played last night for a few hours and alt tabbed out. I'm using core temp as my monitor. Showed 78C as max and was sitting around 68C right after i tabbed out. It seems that is nothing to worry about

I ordered the Thermaltake Massive Cool 23 CS. Not looking for any great reduction in temps or anything but it just seems more solid, which is great for me since I travel a good bit. Would disabling turbo boost hurt me since I only have the i5 two core cpu? I read a bunch of articles on here but it was just people with the 4 core i7. Any ideas on that?

 

Do you have i5 or i7? Try asking dell to do the repaste for you or bring your laptop to a local pc repair shop to have them do it. I might do the latter when i find time because alienware support is not free in my country and the labor would be more expensive.

 

It's i7. I might call the Alienware but I am not sure if the Alienware tech guys can come to university dorms : /
