Check the Creative control panel. There is a master button you can toggle on/off to compare the sound quality. In my opinion, you should enable the software when using the internal speakers, but disable it when connected to headphones and home stereos. For my ears, the software makes music sound slightly "hot", which is not good for me as a DJ. But gamers seem to think it has great features for them, so YMMV. The r2 sound hardware is supposed to be superior to the r1, but my r1 still sounded pretty similar w/o software installed.

The R2 has a superior Creative audio chip, but on the internal speakers you're not going to feel any difference without any software enhancements enabled. But with a pair of good headphones, you might well notice.

I have a Samsung with a subwoofer and realtek chipset, My notebook has really great sound in my opinion, but i was getting a random popping noise from the speakers, I tried the reg patches mentioned above but they did nothing, so i removed the recording devices completely, as long as you dont use skype or record music ect, it fixed my problem.
