I'm just about to order a new M14x but, seeing as I always seem order something days before an upgrade comes out I was wondering if there was an ETA on the R2 M14x? Thanks in advance!

Most companies including dell don't often release these details. Seeing as though this laptop came out in april, I would expect it to be updated with ivy bridge and a better gpu somewhere around the same time frame next year. So no, there's no r2 coming out in 2 weeks, purchase with confidence!

If they release the m14x with a better graphics card I will be thoroughly angry unless I can somehow exchange.

Anyway back to the topic, as for the M14xR2, I dont think Dell would release it in now, but you can expect them to do so in Q3-Q4 of 2012, because of the Ivy Bridge is set to release in Q1-Q2 of 2012. So it is quite likely that it would happen. And I also would like to see a new GPU on that R2 version as well.

Hey, I happen to know an engineer working for alienware (only on a german forum), and he claims that the m15xr2 with ivy bridge will be announced first in january..
after that an m17xr4 will follow, and to the very last the m14xr2..

He also said they tested various other GPUs on the m14x but the cooling failed, so there probably wont be a gpu upgrade. Also common sense tells us that an ivy bridge update is unlikely to happen without a stronger GPU..

I can tell you, if youre thinking about getting one, do it now.. I wouldnt want to wait another year.. Basically any game runs fine, even the most intensive like the witcher 2, bf3 and bfbc2.. I didnt even overclock my graphic card yet..

R2? What new line of gpu will they put in? No 6xx series yet? The cpu's are just a little faster versions of whats already available? No ground breaking tech to add to what could or would be considered a R2.

Anotherwards, nothing from a tech standpoint warrants them releasing a R2. As for the 555 haters, Im sure their is a clevo, sager or asus that would probably make them happier.

Gamba posted before I finished but I echo what he posted. Nothing from a tech standpoint would push a R2 release. He was also right on the money with the gaming opinion as well. The m14x plays games just fine!

To relieve your mind, it would be very irresponsible for dell to make the revision 2 without waiting for ivy bridge. They will lose out on a lot of money that they are making on the m14x r1 if they made an r2 already. Basically they have to milk it. And for better graphics, I would really doubt that the m14x is getting a better graphics card, at least until the new generation nvidia 600 series comes out, and even then , its not going to get a fully dedicated gtx 560/(660). It would hurt the sales of the m17x. It'll just get a better generation gt 555m. Thats my take on it.

I could think of a few tech related issues that need to be solved in an R2. Ivy will be a 22nm process which means less heat and we know our m14x needs less heat, but our R1s should be able to run that.

I agree the cooling could be better on the R1. (from a dell perspective) I think Dell believes its a non-issue when not overclocking. So a R2 will probably not be in the near future.

I thought the M15x is discontinued a year ago since I cant seem to find (or buy) it anywhere in the Alienware store. So how about the M11xR4 and M18xR2?

As for the cooling is as what I expect, since the first version is so bad especially the i7 CPU, even though I said I looking forward to the M14xR2, but I'm going to get the M17xR4 next year.

I cant see their being an m18x r2, but just updated m18xs with new gpus and stuff, like the m15x. M14x, though, i wouldnt expect till the nvidia 600 series late next year. It would be awesome if they made like an ultra portable m15x (15.6 inch screen with 555M or 665M with like no bezel and stuff). Itd be just like an m14x with a bigger, higher res 1080p screen

Well, there was some talk that a mobo replacement could be possible. Since the GPU is on the mobo, if the R2 just ahd a GT 665M or whatever on the motherboard as well, you could maybe switch the motherboards out. It would be hard but possibly worthwhile, but I can't really see the 600 series being THAT big of an increase. I think itll be like the jump from the 200 series to the 300 or something

I wouldn't imagine that the 6-series replacement of our 555M is something we can't just overclock to match performance wise. Feature set could be a different story (for ex, improved power consumption, heat, DirectX/OpenGL version, etc).

Its gonna be a big bummer if cooling failed on other GPU's. Clearly means M14x is stuck with GT555m for a while. Perhaps they will ressurect M15x and shelve M14x. Its too powerful for its 14 inch chassis to handle its hotness :D

Cooling is failing mainly on the the CPU and not the GPU.
Problem though is that there's only one heatpipe for both of them.
So if they throw in a cooler CPU (And probably ivy bridge will be exactly that) a stronger GPU would be imaginable as well...
