An R2 will come with a SATA port and an mSATA port. You can leave the regular hard drive in there and buy an mSATA drive to add-on as a boot drive, or you can just swap the SATA HDD with a SATA SSD. No reason why you can't leave the mSATA empty.

So technically, the Corsair Force Series 3 SATA 3 SSD I linked to is enough, but I could technically add another SSD (mSATA) at a later point right?? Okay thanks a lot for the input!

Yup, you can always add an mSATA later on and run two SSDs

Can someone tell me where the msata is. I did what he did and took out my 7200rpm and added a ssd. Now I want another drive for backup so I would like to use the msata but where is it. Pic would be great

Ok I found it, but what goes where the yellow box is

I see no reason why you would use mSATA _and_ a SSD in the HDD slot. I left the HDD options at default and then upgraded a Samsung 830 Series SSD myself. Worked fine.

So basically you put a Samsung 830 Series SSD in the mSATA slot, and still using the normal HDD you got with the system as is. How big is your mSATA SSD?

mSATA is just a small card. If you use above pic as an example, it would be roughly 2- 2.5times the WLAN card.

So how is he using a Samsung SSD with the HDD that came with the laptop? I thought they use the same slot?

Doesn't the M14x r2 have space for two full-size drives? The Dell website implies that it does, although it sounds unlikely given the laptop's size.

Come to think of it iain_m, you can order a RAID setup, so that explains how he's using a HDD and SSD. You should be able to have two drives apparently :)

Those msata 32/64gb are Samsung PM830 MSATA SSD , also run with Sata lll speed.

Well you can only slot a 2.5" drive & a msata. as he mentioned SSD(msata) and a normal 2.5" HDD. Hope this helps.

That's what I would have expected too, but on the Dell Alienware UK site they offer the M14x r2 with "512GB RAID 0 (2x256GB) Solid State Drives", which implies two identical 2.5" SSDs.

After reading this a few times I think he just means he ordered the default HDD and then upgraded it .... hes a little all over the place so it could be read a few different ways

    Could use something like this

I suppose so, but then it seems odd that the largest available factory mSATA for that model is only 64Gb.
