Just recently got myself a m14x, autoCAD is one of the most frequently used software as I'm an engineer. After installing the autoCAD, I open it to try to draw some drawing. It opened smoothly but when I wanted to draw a line, it start to lag, I mean the graphic not the computer, it doesnt hang just lag. How to solve this problem? I installed the latest graphic driver still its the same, any1 facing the same problem as well?

Ensure you're running autoCAD with the NVIDIA GPU. You can try this by right clicking the shortcut to autoCAD and choosing to run it on the NVIDIA graphics processor.

Try updating to the 275.33 driver as instructed elsewhere in this forum. That fixed my issues with SolidWorks.

it's an optimus issue. Both Autodesk and Nvidia are aware and will not provide a solution.
This is why the new line of precision mobile workstations have the option to disable optimus in bios.
Check the nvidia support boards under optimus section to see the slew of similar reports.

Autodesk programs are not compatible with optimus.

    here's more info

my bug report for gtx 460m + autodesk programs (cad, revit, 3ds 2011 and 2012). I was eventually told that Autodesk has decided they will no longer support mobile GPUs, and therefore do not wish to assist in a fix. Nvidia suggested purchasing a Quadro/FX M to alleviate stability issues.

    and...

Memory leak problems with GeForce 540M and Autodesk programs. - NVIDIA Forums
    (not limited to 540M)

Ways that I was able to minimize the issue before returning my m17xr3 for a different r3 with the AMD 6970. Sorry for the random and vague nature of what I'm about to describe, it's been a few months since I had to deal with this:
    • set master default GPU selection in nvidia control panel to High performance nvidia GPU
    • in the menu that shows the rotating nvidia icon (3d quality?) make sure that the box saying something like "use my settings" or "use application profiles" with "TAKE ME THERE" is selected.
    • set master default power mode to maximize performance - This is MOST IMPORTANT step and will eliminate the lag experienced from GPU downclocking itself after a few seconds of inactivity
    • set master default display mode to single screen, single GPU (unless you use dual screens)
    • change any other setting you think may help in the master section, I can't remember them all.
    • Whitelist Autocad. You will have to browse for the program. When you find it, apply and close then reopen control panel.
    • I believe there's a box and a pull-down menu regarding which GPu to use, make sure they are using the nvidia gpu specifically, even though your default should be nvidia.
    • change any program specific settings in nvidia control panel that you feel may help, duplication of defaults that you set globally is actually important.
    • Make sure to apply after each change is made.

In autocad, open hardware acceleration menu at bottom right corner, or by typing 3dconfig.
    • Manual tune
    • Enable hardware acceleration
    • if you work in 3d and dislike line tearing, enable "smooth display" (this may need to be changed EVERY time you reopen autocad, which is really painful) EDIT: I don't think 2009 has this option, sorry!
    • reduce transparency quality to low EDIT: I don't think 2009 has this option either
    • reduce dynamic tessellation EDIT: or this...
    • reduce number of tessellations to cache EDIT...or this! fail lol
Just make sure D3D.hdi is selected as your profile monitor in 3dconfig and install the dx end user runtime updater described below. You can try playing with the settings available; this is how I figured how to semi-maximize my performance.
You can also try discarding back faces (this is similar to 3ds max's culling), but I suggest against "smooth faces by default"
I also remember experiencing HIGHER performance when disabling adaptive degradation, and I'm not really sure why.....

Also make sure you download and install the directx end-user runtime update. oh wow, lol. I just realized you said autocad 2009...will have to rewrite some of the above info. Anyway....yes this is actually very important as 2009 gives option to use DX or openGL....make sure D3D.hdi is selected in 3dconfig as the profile manager

Interesting, as I have no issues running the NVIDIA GPU through 3ds Max 2011 on my M14x. Are you sure 3ds Max is also causing this problem, or just certain products in their range such as AutoCAD?

I would try AutoCAD but I'm waiting for my SSD to still arrive today via Royal Mail Special Delivery (by 1pm), though as time moves further along I'm getting doubts that it'll arrive even though the tracking number says otherwise. I have an educational account with Autodesk so I've got access to products such as AutoCAD for free, fully functional as if I had bought it.

Once I've reinstalled my system and got everything sorted I'll see if I can try AutoCAD.

Installed driver 275.33, now this is wat it shows:
" Display driver stopped responding & has recovered
Display driver NVIDIA windows kernel mode driver version 275.33 stop responding and has successfully recovered"
