Dell.com will not let me choose the SSD with the i5 CPU. Says I must choose the i7. Why is this?

typical marketing  you can get a cheaper and faster(SATA III instead of SATA II) SSD from a place like newegg. Dell usually overcharges on RAM and HD upgrades.

That's what I thought, but just wanted to make sure. I just put a Crucial M4 256GB SSD in my desktop so I will prob get that drive for the M14x.

    Thanks

I'm looking to install an ssd drive into my m14x to replace the 500gb hdd. I initially thought of going with the ssd in the upgrade option on the dell site because of the posts i've read about people having trouble with the different ssd's. I tried upgrading on the site to see what ssd it was but once i changed the hdd option to ssd it says you you have to change the processor. does this mean that the i5 processor has compatibility issues with ssd's or is this restriction a marketing purpose only?

What ssd is known to be stable for m14x users, esp i5 ones?

May be the crucial m4.. Cannot recall seeing any issues with that one posted, although who knows considering someone reported issues with a Seagate Momentus XT which isn't even a hybrid.

Unfortunately there is no sure bet with any SSD in the M14x. I run a M4 in mine and only have issues about 10% of the time (just cold boot issues). There are multiple threads on issues/work-a-rounds.
