was thinking of possibly going from the stock 6gb 1600mhz set to a 8gb 1866mhz set. i went into the Bios a seen there are a TON of performance options to mess with including RAM timings Etc.

    1. has anyone really taken the time to mess with the Bios settings, results?

    2. will the R2 even run the ram at the rated speed?

    3. which set of Ram do you suggest?

    thanks

I have a 8Gb M14x and I would definitely recommend it, I know WEI is not the best reference you can get, but with those 8gb 1866mhz give me 7.9 out of 7.9.

I have not messed with BIOS options at all, only turned off Turbo Boost for a 10°C decrease on CPU temps (I also would recommend it as I haven't seen any game impact at all).

v curious if the r2 can run 1866 RAM at full speed?

    same here.

no point in buying ram that will cost 1/3rd more if it wont run "faster"

also wondering about PNP (plug and play) & the intel profiles.

if none of this BS matters on the M14x then i'll just go with a $40 8Gb set of trusty GSkill with heat spreaders. :)

IIRC current reports are that it downclocks to 1600 due to the pnp nature of the product. BUT it does increase the WEI rating to 7.9 ;) LOL

was poking around in the Bios and it has the options for speeds up to 2133mhz.

also 2 XMP profiles and one custom profile you can set up. timings, voltage and all.

Intel's site say the 3610Qm only supports up to 1600mhz. im wondering if this is more of a CPU specific thing and the Mother board is just designed to support several different CPUs?

come on guys... i dont want to be the labrat this time.. lol

Interesting... Malibal.com only offers 1600 mem with the 3610, so it must be a cpu limitation. Pretty sure they were offering faster mem with Sandy Bridge configs, but I could be wrong. Oh well.

My finel conlusoin is that 1866 mem will downclock to 1600 and work OK in the m14x r2 w/ 3610. It might even give a small WEI (e-peen) bump, but I bet it will still run at 1600.

that pretty much what im thinking.

TBH IDK a lot about the i series CPUs. but im pretty sure a lot of stuff has been moved onto the CPU including the memory controller. so i dont think the mobo will have much to do with it, other than needing to support it.

i mean the CPU is stupid powerful as is and as far as gaming goes i would assume the 650m is going to be the bottle neck regardless... so not sure if running sightly faster RAM will mean much other than slightly better benchmarks & hotter CPU temps with the memory controller working harder.

might just bite the bullet on this 8Gb GSkill kit for $40 and call it a day.

1 vote for the 8GB 2x4 Kingston HyperX 1866. running in an r2 with a 3820qm and can confirm it is running @ 1866 with no bios changes. I have been looking for a 16GB 8x2 set of 1866 and havent found any yet. i was thinking of getting set of good high end 1600 and trying to OC the ram to 1866 in the bios. I doubt ill get to a stable 1866, but I need more than 8 due to VMs so ill see what happens.

hmm. intels site also says your CPU only supports up to 1600mhz.

so i guess it is possible then ehh?

    thanks for the input/exp. :)

running the 1600 @1833 my work if you relax the timings down to 1600mhz spec. just a thought?

Agreed with shnarf, I know that config works fine. However the recommendation from our engineers is to keep it standard for more stability.
