So two years ago, my M14x R1 stopped charging and I did everything to try fix it, and ended up finding out the motherboard was shot. At the time, I was about to start school so I bought an ultrabook to mull me over. Recently, I've grown sick of how atrocious the keyboard, trackpad, speakers, lack of ports and everything except the screen and form factor were on that computer, so I started juggling the idea of swapping out the mobo of my R1 to an R2. Most of what I read is not really concrete, and I actually had not seen someone say "Yeah I did it. It works, this is what you need."
I ordered an R2 motherboard and heatsink and dropped those in. The fan that was already in the computer could be used, but I had to chop down the vent a little bit so it would fit with the new heatsink. So far, it works fabulously.
So I get that it's not by any means top of the line anymore, but it definitely works. For someone who is relatively computer inept, I never thought I would get to upgrade a laptop.
Enjoy
