    Hi everyone,

As you can see my in signature I'm using the world's most unreliable SSD from OCZ (vertex 3). Been having booting/startup problems since got this half a year ago, can never find a solution, have updated to the latest firmware 2.22 (Worse ever) and i have decided to give up on this SSD, i should have done research before purchasing it, because ever since i got problems with the SSD i researched on how to fix it and realized that it is a very common problem for OCZ vertex 3 to fail on m14x. Just want to know who's has the same spec as me and running on SSD that has never failed. Reliability is what I'm looking for.

    Thanks heaps

The most popular SSD on the forum nowadays is the Crucial M4. It's cheap compared to others and while not being the fastest it's very reliable.

The Crucial M4 is the only one I've had worked without issues on the R1. Tried the Corsair Force GT and Samsung 830; the Corsair would cause the notebook to BSOD within minutes, and the Samsung will occasionally cause the system hang for a minute.

Samsung 830 and Crucial M4 are both excellent contenders, either one will do you proud!

Plextor M2 and M3s are amazing solid state drives. Incredibly fast with one of the lowest power consumption at idle and load (like the M4 and Samsung 830). 5 year warranty, and rock solid stability and reliability.

I've been using the M2 for almost a year, and just picked up an M3 for my desktop. No regrets.

Crucial M4 & Samsung 830 are the best for M14xR1/R2.

I've tested OCZ Vertex 3/4 both of them are epic fail , I'm tired of explain the reason , just frustrated.

Would have to put another notch down for the Samsung 830 series, have a 128gb and its performance is flawless. If I couldn't bring myself to outlay the dosh (I needed the laptop migration kit), or found a deal too good to pass up I think the Crucial M4 would be just fine as well - these are great reliable drives and from everything I have read are the best two options out there on the M14xR1 (and seem to have the least issues).

I have a sammy 470 128gb version (sata2) and I am happy with it. Also have the 830 256gb for my desktop and love it. No issues with eithet :)

Thanks everyone for helping and giving me great recommendations. So is either Samsung or Crucial now. Gonna be hard to decide, will update this thread with results when I get the ssd. Just wondering if eBay is a good place to buy? I live in Australia so I can't buy from newegg unfortunately.

I've had an OCZ vertex LE in my laptop since i had it and never had a problem, but then again i think it's sata2 so i dont think sata2 drives caused a problem.

were the vertex 3's that bad?

I'm also getting a Samsung 830 and living in Australia. After looking around u can get one on ebay for $230-$280 depending on how lucky u get. For the last week now there's been nothing cheaper than $275 but a couple of weeks ago some were going for $230 (if you were lucky and quick).

I'm getting mine from Umart if i can't find one on ebay cheaper than $250 within the next week. Its $295 from Umart but i can pick it up immediately, it doesn't have to be subjected to an epic postage trip from the US, can return it immediately for a replacement if it's faulty and no risk of getting a fake etc.

Oh and Samsung 830 is definitely the way to go from my research :)

Yeah I hate to say it but I should have researched before I buy it. I'm not doubting the speed of vertex 3, but it always takes minimum of 10-15 tries to get in windows. Never heard anyone without problem running vertex 3 on m14x is either slight problem (after tweaking) or really bad problem with the boot up. It is very frustratin, never again. Good luck with yours

Yeah thanks for the recommendation, I'm looking for 128gb only but Samsung 830 sounds great, I'll probably do just a little more research on both SSDs. Thanks again

Since my hdd died, i run a Samsung 830 256gb.
With flashed BIOS A08 you can have SATA 3 speed.
    Very nice SSD btw.

I actually couldn't wait and bought the SSD last night, i bought the Samsung 830 128gb because i researched on any error reporting or compatibility problem with m14x online, found none. Crucial m4 is very reliable also however, there are very little error report online but not specifically with m14x, maybe not the SSD's fault, could be people's incapabillity. Anyway, so far (a whole night of installation) the Samsung 830 didn't disappoint me one bit. Never fails and lightning fast, i got a really good feeling about this. Thanks everyone for their input, thank you!!

Was going to say, for Australia best place to buy is somewhere like B&H Photo - with shipping it still works out cheaper than AU prices (and is the closest thing I've found to newegg, I bought mine there). I think you will be very happy with it as have read very similar reports to yourself on errors/reliability.

Over 1/4 of people were not happy.

OCZ is well known for poor reliability/high failure rates. If you examine much of their products, the failure rates (RMA's, Malfunctions; Future Failures) range from 25-33%~ based on review statistics. To me it's just not worth the risk and the hassles of going through RMA and even then, chances of getting a second lemon is still pretty high.

    ---

    - Intel & Samsung are #1 (usually more expensive than the one's listed below)
    - Other good SSD's are Corsair, Patriot, Kingston and Crucial (these brands are usually more affordable).

That place has awesome prices - does anyone know if the warranty it comes with is valid worldwide? Also would i need to get the one with the internal laptop kit or is stand-alone fine?

Stand-alone is fine, mine is just the SSD itself, m14x got adaptors. Go youtube to see the whole process of swapping the SSD
