I had mentioned in the thread you opened to try a power drain, but re-installing the Command Center may also be worth the shot.

 

310.70 is definitely an Nvida GT/GTX driver. It is out now for both desktop and mobile GPUs.

 

I get the following error when AlienRespawn tries to automatically update itself:

When I try to manually check for updates, I get the same error.

 

I thought I should post this 'mod' here (though it is not really a mod on cooling).

So, I thought like anyone else on how to improve the cooling on this machine. Did all that possible including dismantling the machine and repasting the GPU + CPU.

Long story short, yesterday I thought (knowing that while gaming or all kind of 3D software will make your system heat up during the load), that the cooling fan actually has no place from where to take air and push it out. All that I did, I removed the back plate from the memory and notice that atleast now the system does run a bit cooler and that the right side of the laptop stays constantly cooler. Also at idle while browsing, or doing some 'light' job on the machine, the fan does not turn on that much as it used to be doing it before. The PCH diode also has decreased the temperature about 5 degrees.

Hope this will work for everyone, as it is an easy fix and anyone with / without computer skills can do it...

 

I'm going to try it! is true that the laptop gets really hot while gaming or doing stress things... i bought a new fan, a new thermal paste ( ic diamond 24 ) and with your tip, im going to try and then i tell you what happend! In my case the laptop get really hot on the right side on the plastic near the power button...and well all the right side...

Gonna give this a whirl as well. If nothing else, it will give it a bit more air intake.

Gave it a whirl but it didn't make much if any difference. Put the plate back on.

 

14XR2 Hardware failure problems. First motherboard at 3 months, then hard drives consistently every two months. After enough complaints, AW coughed up a replacement machine. Hard drive dead 3 months later, it's replacement died 3 weeks after that. The Dell tech spends more time at my house than I do. Am I right in assuming this is heat related and what can I do about it ? Son's computer, most use is gaming.

 

Sounds like your son is cooking the machine. How does he play? Im hoping it's on a flat surface that doesn't block any of the air vents on the bottom, these machines aren't macbooks, they require adequate ventilation. If you are computer handy at all, have him load up one of his more graphically intense games and observe gpu and cpu temps after running for a while. Report back to us with cpu and gpu temps and we can at least tell how the machine is running. For all intents and purposes, you want this to be a controlled experiment, so record the temperatures while playing exactly like he would (as in, if he plays in his room laying in bed, you probably have your answer there).

 

Hi, I just found out my m14x r2's screen is black. I am blind and use a screen reader so it could have been this way since i received it last december. Device manager says everything is working. Is there a hotkey to turn the screen off? Possibly I hit it by accident. Thanks!

 

M14x R2 650M lost problem.
After couple hours using, browsing the internet basically, no heavy duty, a short black screen flickering and 650M is dead, and a yellow exclamation point in device manager.under display adapter category.
Reboot will bring it back, but it probably will happen again several hours later, randomly.
Whenever the 650M is dead, the sleep mode option seems to be grayed out. I do not know if they are related somehow.
Seems like it only happens when 650M is "idle". It never happened when I was gaming with it, yet.

Bios version: A12
Operating System: Win 7
nVidia driver: it says 9.18.13.717 in the device manager.

What is the ETA on a fix for this Alienware?

What is needed to fix this is a downloadabl3e patch as the self-updater does not work. This is a really annoying error. Strange thing is, it doesn't happen on my Aurora R3.

For now, I have disabled checking for updates.

 

I just got the 4th gen has well version.

However my Wi-Fi keep getting the limited connection on my Wi-Fi. On n off it will go from ok to limited connection.

Any ways to solve it?

Also my set comes with 1600 X 900 screen, but I can't seem to change the resolution in my desktop. Can only use 1366 x 768

 

I have a problem regarding with my alienfx. when i use my alienware without the charger the alienfx gets automatically disabled and on the other hand when i use it with my charger the lights are turned on!! And whenever i restart my system the alienfx icon disappers!! any suggestions guys to fix it!!!!!

Weird situation. I would recommend you to follow this guide to reinstall the command center.

 

Recently bought a used M14X R1 with Windows 8 installed and went home for Christmas. Was working fine until today, where upon playing CK2 the computer froze. Alt-Ctrl-Del only took me to a frozen screen so I turned the laptop off via power button and turned it back on. Laptop proceeded to start loading, went through Alienware loading screen before reaching Windows loading screen. Attempted to load that, before going to a blue screen (not of death), stating that the computer was going to do an error report before restarting the laptop. Doesn't go past 0% before it just restarted, and three hours later I can say that the pattern hasn't changed.

Help?

Edit: Some additional information. Did a diagnostics run, error was revealed to be 2000-0145, which appears to be a driver problem. Now, seeing as I'm assuming that I'm unable to update the driver to a more current one (see Windows 8 BIOS dilemma), I may have to replace the drive when I get back to the UK in January. I think. I'm really not that computer savvy.

 

1 month out of warranty and my M14x R2 stops working.

Turn it on, get 5 beeps and a black screen.

Support says I need new motherboard! And they don't have any in stock!?!

They suggested I go find a motherboard online.

$1,400 paperweight after 13 months of moderate use. Not impressed.

 

Go to your dell account page and click on "Check My Warranty Status". You should be able to purchase an extended warranty so that you can have your M14x R2 serviced under the warranty.

That error does seem to be a Hard Drive Failure - I would suggest you first try taking out the hard drive and putting it back in to see if this resolves the issue.

I'm afraid that a 5 Beep code is either a problem with the motherboard or with the Coin Cell Battery - try removing it and putting it back in. If that still does not solve the issue I cannot advise you to extend your warranty when you already have a pre-existent condition in your computer (that would not be covered by the warranty). If you need a motherboard replacement and you did not have any luck with us directly (since we no longer produce those computers). My best advise would be to refer you to ztronics.com they are our most trusted site for Alienware parts that are no longer produced.

 

So my battery is pretty much dead, 8% of it total power output remains (confirmed by Alien Autopsy report) and everything else on my PC has "passed" such as CPU,Graphics card etc.

My issue has started 2 days ago when the PC has just started to become very slow. I would normally game Counter strike and league of legends on highest settings and always clear about 80-140fps. Now im lucky to get 40fps and sometimes going even as low as 15fps.

I have system restored to an point before these issues and its still the same. I have CCLeaned, Defragged and scanned for viruses and its clean on all fronts. With over half of my hard drive space remaining and in terms of background processes its running only 25% of the CPU and 2.35 of my 6gb DDR4 RAM.

I can't understand what's after happening to my laptop I have done everything I can think to check. Could anyone please help me?

Also when my charger is plugged in, I get "Plugged in,not charging"...this could hardly caused by the battery because even with the battery removed and solely running on the charger i still have very bad performance.

Could someone help?
