This thread is to discuss the ability to overclock the CPUs in the M14x.

Does anyone know how overclockable they are and what the process would be like?

Unless the BIOS allows multiplier changes, OCing is all-but irrelevent.

With BCLK changes, we're talking, maybe, a 5% increase. Even that probably won't be stable.

If however they allow us to screw with the Turbo Boost settings - it looks like they will from the manual - single-theaded applications might so some worthwhile gain.

Yea it says on the Alienware site (when customizing) that you can turbo boost every processor. Its turbo boost so its not permanent but will act the same

    so I read those links

it seems the bios offers overclocking to some degree

so my question is, say I have the 2630QM chip which is clocked at 2.0gh. What is a realistic speed I can safely overclock it to on a permanent basis without overheating or crashing. (I'm completely new to overclocking so I have no idea what to expect...but some ppl have said that sandry bridge is not suited for overclocking, so Im confused as whether or not it is possible to overclock the chip beyond 2.0gh)

    Brick wall anyone?
You can't. It's not like you'd have any use for it anyway... It won't affect gaming in the slightest, and the CPU should handle pretty much any other task with ease anyway.

ok, after some googling, it seems that the CPUs offered in the M14x cannot be overclocked due to sandy bridge limitations :\

Wouldn't underclocking give us better battery?

Only very slightly. Undervolting however would have more of a benefit.

According to Intel only the extreme or K's have an unlocked multiplier. Sb base clock went down to 100 from sometimes 200-266 like on m11x. I have an Sb desktop and I was only able to overclock base to 103.5 with liquid cooling. so with a 33x multiplier max turbo on the 2720 (I know the 2630 is less. Your looking at maybe 116 mhz overclock when utilizing one core on the turbo, at best. Now will I over clock my blck by one just for the hell of it probably, but really there is no increase here.
