I have the 500gig xt and I do notice a performance increase in the apps and games I play regularly. I don't reboot often so boots aren't super fast but I do notice it still boots faster a little.

i never tested the computer with the original hdd, so i cant compare. all i know is, is it's lightning quick

I would swap it out and get an adaptor for the drive in the laptop. i.e External 750GB HDD

How does the xt work exactly? I know it has around 4gb in solid state memory. But how is it utilized? Is it a separate partition? Or does it kind of act like a larger cache?

It has its own firmware that puts often used files on the SS portion. The firmware apparently "learns" from usage, so if you play a game often it'll put that game on the SS portion for quick loading.
M14X aand Momentus XT
