Hey guys, wanted to ask for some help on this forum because I know you guys here are really helpful, and I know that by experience. Well anyway, my gpu and cpu are both reaching 90-95 degrees celsius, and this is causing a gigantic drop in fps, to the point that I can't play games. Plus, I'm sure that's not good for the components themselves. Well to start off, I'm gonna say what I've tried until now:
-I've thoroughly cleaned the laptop's insides from dust.
-I tried using a cooling pad.
-I turned off turbo boost. But I think it's on now because I had updated the bios. (But it hadn't changed anything anyway.)
-And then again, I updated the bios.
I can't do a repaste unfortunately, because you can't find thermal paste here in Egypt... Fortunately enough, I'm going to Marseille, France in a couple of weeks and I'm sure I'll find what I need there. But for now, I need some help getting the temps down a notch, I've thought of underclocking the cpu but I wanted to ask if that would help in any way.
Well thank you, and I hope someone can help me.

I know you said that you thoroughly cleaned it from dust, did you disassemble the fan and cleaned it completely? and the vents on the heat sink?
Check if your fan is running at full rpm at the posted temps. The re-pasting should help you once that is done.

Yes, I have. I think the fan isn't running at full rpm, because when I go into hwinfo and set the fan to max (7000 rpm) it sounds much louder than it already is, and that's with the 90 degree temps.

And it then comes back to running the way it was, which is still pretty loud, I'd guess 5500 rpm or so.

Yeah I'm sorry, but the m14x r1, is notorious for having over heating issues. It's cooling design is just bad, from what I hear the new AW 14 does a better job considering the single exhaust solution. That's why I returned my m14x r2, and got an asus g46 instead

That I know, but I'm trying to find a solution, at least temporary before I do a repaste. I've been thinking about downclocking the cpu, as I don't think having the clocks that high is really helping in any way, performance-wise. But it sure isn't helping in regards to heat.

I have good news for everyone owning an R1 (and probably R2), I lowered the maximum processor power state from the power options to 80%, temps have gone down to 50 degrees on normal use, while it was like 70 and it stays in the 80s on load :D This is amazing.
EDIT: Nevermind, it seemed to help at first, but now it's going back to the normal high temps.

Updating the thread: As no one seemed to have a solution I kept trying some stuff to see if it would help, I first decided to clean the computer and the fan, again. Then I removed the Optical Drive as I thought it might improve airflow and I also removed the ram cage or whatever it's called, I now seem to max out at 75 degrees celsius, but I'm downloading benchmarks to make sure once and for all.
EDIT: I ran some tests using different benchmarks, gpu never goes over 75 degrees until now, and 80 for the cpu. I don't know which one of those three steps I took actually helped with the temp drops, if not all of them. But I am going to try putting back the optical drive and the ram cage, and check if those were actually helping with the temp drop.
EDIT 2: Ran furmark for 20 mins and gpu load is at 99%, max temp was 70c.
EDIT 3: Running with stable 830/1080 overclock, and temps don't go over 65c

I'm currently having this same problem. I have an m14x R1 that I bought a year and a half ago. I updated my Nvidia driver and got the latest bios update, turned turbo boost off, and cleaned out (superficially) the fan and the back plate. I also reduced the maximum processor state to 98% as I saw somewhere that this can help with overheating. Despite all of this, I still get temperatures in the 90C+ range after roughly 10 minutes of playing BF3 on lowest settings (I stop playing before it reaches above 95C). Can I ask what solved the problem for you?

I removed the optical drive and the ram "cage".

You might want to try a cooling pad, when the fan in my old m11x broke I was able to use it on one of those without issue, including gaming, until I got a new fan installed.

    this is what I faced.
MY GPU temps were getting to93-94 and CPU 98 after gaming for sometime.
I did a complete teardown , cleaned everthing and repasted both CPU and GPU.
After that my gpu remains belwo 70 and cpu low 80s.
Now well i put some extra paste over the cpu that time so i recenlty repasted again.
Now the gpu remians 65-64 , basically bewlow 70 and cpu nt crossing 80. so
Cleaning and repasting is the best option. i bough ARctic MX from ebay...

Now I am pro in repasting laptops. Did respate to all friends and family laptops of different brands. its fun,,lol
