You should be able to set up two finger scrolling on 11.04.

I didn't understand the part where you said:

"when you will have to reboot, if you are lucky you will see the interface, when i got the screen display issue i had, i had to shut down completely and wait then open a terminal and do the following. "

Because when I try to install, I get the black screen with half white-grey color lines, so I have to force power off my m14x and then it just goes back to normal. I dont know what interface or terminal you are talking about because I can't even access there.

if you want to save time, the old guide is useless right now.

Well, i would recommend installing the 11.10 beta 2.

Everything works out of the box, and is pretty stable.

http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.10/ubuntu-11.10-beta2-desktop-i386.iso (if you have less than 4gb)
http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.10/ubuntu-11.10-beta2-desktop-i386.iso (if you have more than 4gb)

Also, burn the CD and follow the instructions you should be fine.

    Hi,

Everything? There's no need to install the kernel that you mencioned above? Or Bummblebee? What about the graphics? and most of all the battery life? mmm what about the HDMI, VGA, USB 3.0, USB Charger Ports, etc?

Sorry for all the questions, all your answers are very appreciated. Thank you very much for your help and answers.

    Best Regards,

Okay, no, the new kernel in the beta2 of ubuntu 11.10 works fine.
You still have to get bumblebee to work your videocard, unfortunately battery has suffered a lot, i can get mostly 2h.

    https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bumblebee

    This works number one.

They had to stop worrying for the battery life because there was some issues with ACPI calls and such.

USB3 you still have to make the modification i have done in the thread.
USB charges very well and i didn't have an issue with that.
HDMI should work, i only tried VGA and the monitor was detected automatically.

For new users, get the latest beta of ubuntu 11.10, this covers mostly all you need to make ubuntu work.

Sorry again if this info is sparse ;)

    Hi,

Any help is welcome! As I said "all your answers are appreciated" no really matters if they are sparse or not.

I searched a lot about M14X on Ubuntu and I can tell than you have been made a lot of research. I'm telling this 'cause all threads around you.

I'm wondering. Did you tried the #3 step at this website Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits installation on Asus U35JC | Lost in linuxation

    Looks very conviencent,

    Regards,

Yeah, i used to test with the ACPI calls, they work and they shut down the NVIDIA card, i was able to get about 4h of battery in linux.

    ;)

Right now, i needed the card more than the battery life.

    Hi,

First of all thanks 4 ur help! And tips!

Finally i'm running Ubuntu 11.10 beta 2 with kernel 3.0.0-12-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP on my alienware m14x.

I can use optirun for those apps that requires nvidia graphics and when i'm not using that kind of apps I just turn off the nvidia card with the acpi_call. It really helps a lot. My m14x temp's decress and battery life incress from 2 hrs to 4 hrs.

    Once again! Thanks!

    What about u?

    Regards!

    Hello,

Suddenly my fans stop working under ubuntu 11.10 and CPU temp is getting to high. On Win7 everything is ok. Meanwhile I'll using Win7 until I find a solution.

    Anybody with this issue.

    Regards!

Has anyone else had Wifi problems after upgrading to 11.10 or just me?

Since upgrading from 11.04 my wifi has slowed to a crawl and internet is basically unusable. Please let me know if it works for you or doesn't - either way - so that I know if it is a general issue affecting M14x owners or just me!

    Thanks,

    nic

How are you installing? I did the Windows installer that installs it as a directory on the main partition. Seems like the safest way, no fiddling with partitions... Or are you guys partitioning your drives for it?
