I read the post in the accessories forum where someone had posted a complete walkthrough about fans and coolers but I couldn't decide which one to buy since I live in India and Zalman and other recommended ones are not available here.

Could you please tell which cooling pad listed on this site - Cooling Pads: Computer Accessories List: Flipkart.com

    are good for the m14x?

Honestly any of the cooler masters will do you just fine. Just pick the right one fitting your budget and have at it!

As far as a cooling pad goes... I use Gigaware Flip-Up Feet (4) under the m14x to prop it up (It's great for when you're on the go and you don't have a cooling pad with you)

I wouldn't say the cooling pad is a must... but it is helpful. I have an i5 2410m which runs cooler than the i7's so I don't have to worry as much as most ppl. Plus... I don't see much of a performance change (if any) from my i5 to an i7. The gpu is the limiting factor, not the cpu. My cpu temps are 80c max, and my gpu temps @770/1540/1080 are 68c max. That's with the 4 gigaware feet under the laptop.

I haven't purchased a cooling pad yet, because I'm waiting for one I like to go on sale.

I got the Targus one today in the post and it seems to be doing the job well with 2 fans and it's pretty quiet so far.

Coolermaster Notepal U2 makes a good stand. I do not even use the fans for it. A cooling pad has not yet been necessary for me as my temps are in the normal range relative to what everyone else reports. The pad itself allows for better airflow and the metal is very conductive of temperature so even without the fans it is a good precaution.

The Notepal U2 looks like it might be uncomfortable if placed on your lap but it actually is fine. It is one of the less expensive pads also.

can be yes, and can be no, it is totally up to you. But if you want your laptop to be free of heat, then it is a yes.

I personally use Cooler Master Notepad U2, because it is convenience since it has 2 movable fan to adjust the position of the vent. I get a cooler because whenever I play Bad Company 2, the CPU always climb up to near 100C most of the time, until I got the cooler, that it is between 85C ~ 95C. Still high though but it is better than between 95C ~ 99C.

Yes, I turn it off since I got to play BF3 Beta, and the avg temp is 75C ~ 90C. For the second question, what are you try to say?

i meant with the second question if even with deactivated turbo boost you get high temps?

But avg 75 to 90 seems okay i guess..

I just got the i5 2430m m14x yesterday, temps are at max 80 with turbo boost turned on while playing bfbc2 for example.. I think it was a good decision even if im missing out on some speed, so many people seem to have the i7 running hot

Yeah, for some unknown reason, the campaign seem to have the i7 running really hot, because the 75C ~ 90C is campaign (I forgot to mention that  ) for the multiplayer, in BF3 the avg is between 63C ~ 85C! (with Cooler) Which is very good!

And me is one of those people who had the heating problem with the i7, at sometime before I bought this CM Notepad U2, the CPU will run as hot as 94C ~ 99C (Turbo Boost on, BFBC2). I never get to try it on BFBC2 with Turbo Boost off though.

Anyway, back to topic, to OP if you going to use your laptop for Gaming, then a cooler is a must or if possible disable Turbo Boost first to see if the temp will drop or not.

Is it possible to underclock the i7 in an effort to reduce temps? How are the latest sb i7's, specifically the 2670m chip with regards to heat?

you can limit turbo boost by using throttlestop, but i would recommend using the unlocked a05 bios, because then you can downvolt your cpu to 2.3 ghz which seems to be the sweet spot.. but you can also just turn off the turbo boost in the bios

btw the 2670qm is exactly the same cpu as the 2630qm just with a slightly higher baseclock.. the temperatures probably wont change at all

I'm curious about what laptop coolers you guys use for your m14x. I have a nice little portable, fold-out one I use while on the road, but I'm looking for something bigger and more of a semi-permanent solution for on my desk at home. I've tried some of the plastic fan trays and aluminum ones but my m14x keeps getting hotter and hotter. Any suggestions?

There is another thread on this from about a month back, however I can recommend a few, depending on your requirements and peoples advice...

Generally it seems the best manufacturer is Notepal and the Coolermaster range...

If like myself you are using the laptop on your lap, or knees, rather than a desk, I would highly recommend the Notepal X2, it has vents, a USB so your exisiting port isn't out of action and a Blue LED light, which, may sounds useless, but in the dark looks quite nice. It also keeps the underneath of my laptop quite cool and seems to diver the hot aware away at the back and draw cool air in from the front, so supports the air flow of an Alienware.

My 2nd recommendation if your after looks but not style, (this isn't a perfect fit for our laptop and probably better for a 17") Is the Collermaster EVO. It's more pricey, but has 2 specially designed fans that create a current of air, blowing hot air and cold air in flow to cool your laptop, personally, I find the X2 better, I bought the EVO at the same time, but am giving it to a family member as I prefer the cheaper model.

Lastly if you aren't using it on your knee, so have the luxury of loose fitting fans that won't catch by being used on a desk, the Coolermaster U2 (the best for the M14X) or U3 both have great reports from users on here, just makes sure you place the fans sucking air from the hot and blowing on the cold, as someone on here had it blowing on the vent lol...

    Hope this helps :D

I don't see how anyone could have the fans blowing on the vent, as the vent is on the rear of the laptop.....

The laptop sucks in cold air on the bottom of the laptop, so it's impossible to place a blowing fan in front of the vent.

Well, if you have the vents on on suck instead of blow, due to having them facing them wrong way, they will work against the fan. Therefore sucking against the fan of the laptop trying to suck cool air in. I apologise for not writing a step by step guide to their flaw.

I personally use the targus chill mat. Im not saying its the best, but it works wonders. It comes with two fans which arent movable, but it kinda covers the cpu fan half way, which is fine for me. It really does keep the laptop cool and cpu temps down a few. But i heard the cooler master u2 is pretty good.

Well with the U2, you can't stick the fans on the bottom without them facing the right way.

I gotta confirm what Drakk has said, the U2 cooler master U2 works really well, as you can position the fans where you want, and when transporting the laptop the cooler turns into a chassis of sorts, in that you can put your laptop inside it to protect the screen.

You can switch the fans around and turn them into exhaust, but it does require some cutting of the fan clips.

However, I am getting lower temps with passive cooling on the U2 stand.
My i7 maxes out at ~85C and my 555m at 62C max. (700/1000)

can anyone provide pictures of their m14x on their laptop cooler? im debating between the u2 and the u3, but feel like the u3 will be overkill. There are some other nice ones, but dont specify if they pull air down away from the laptop or push it up.

The fact that this cooler help to cooling my m14x, I got my turbo boost on and playing NFS:The Run with all medium setting and ultra on texture for 2-3 hours my temp reach 95C when using my old cooler and with this cooler I got around 86C...

Just received my u2 from TigerDirect yesterday. It blows the air upwards, into the vents on the bottom of the m14x. I moved the fans all the way to the upper corners as far as they could go and they're in the perfect spot. I didn't have any hear problems before I got the u2, haven't even been above 74C yet, but with the u2 I've already noticed a 12C drop in temps. Haven't gone above 62C since getting the u2.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon a u2 in the mall the other day. been getting 5C lower temps since then. So it does work. and makes for a really good dust guard too. the angle though is sorta weird so i put 2 eraser on the bottom front to elevate it a bit. I will be looking to redoing the thermal paste next once i muster enough courage.
