    Hey,

So, I'm joining the Alienware computer, and I just bought the M14x yesterday.

I got a 25% discount through an EPP program, and really lucked out. The prediscount total on the laptop was $2013, and the total price I paid was $1610.

So here are the specs for what I got:

So, I sprang for the better processor, and others are telling me I should have stuck with the 2630 & went for the SSD, but I really couldn't afford to lose the space. I have over a TB of data on my desktop, and this laptop is going to become my day-to-day computer, so I'm going to transfer a lot of that over.

But now I'm thinking maybe I'll go aftermarket on the SSD. My real question is, I have no experience with them at all, I know the benefits, but what are the downsides? The Wiki page said that they can only be overwritten so many times, is that true? And if so, how much are we talking?

    Thanks in advanced guys.

You wasted money on the 3 GB video card and 2820 CPU. There is almost zero performance difference between these and the standard 1.5 GB card and 2720 CPU. At least not enough to justify the extra $300. And the performance difference only comes from the CPU. The video cards will perform identically.

I wouldn't exactly say I wasted money. I'm taking video game design classes, and will use this laptop for rendering video and graphics. The upgraded CPU will help reduce any, if not all, of the lag I may have in doing so which was the reason I sprang for it. I didn't mind shelling out an extra $262 to be able to do so, and also know that as technology progresses, my CPU will still be viable for at least a bit longer than had I just gone with the base i7.

Then, I think the GPU was still enough of an upgrade to justify my spending an additional $75 on it.

CPU is fine and I'm sure it will help you compile software....the GPU on the other hand was $75 down the toilet pretty much. The extra Vram will help you run higher AA but the actual GPU chip will run so slow in games at high AA that you can't realistically use it. The only exception might be an older game set at a crazy high AA, but anything relatively new it's just not gonna happen.

You seem like you have a lot of CPU intensive tasks to do so the CPU upgrade was a good idea...GPU though was just not. Anything that would need more than 1.5GB of VRAM would need a better card than the GT555m anyway.
